Just when I thought I’ve seen everything.
When it comes to surprises, Japan never disappoints.
A Japanese company will be sending out drones blaring loud music in an attempt to prevent their employees from overworking.

(Stuff them leaves back in your mouth please)
Yeap, you read that right.
- Japanese company
- Employees going home on time
- Work-life balance
I’m fairly certain none of the points above belongs together.
Anyway, “Taisei”, the company behind the construction of the drone, has announced that the drone will enter its testing phase next April. If proven to be successful, the product would be made available to other companies.
The drone, known as “T-Friend”, will hover over the desks of employees working overtime and play “Auld Lang Syne” until the employee leaves.
(Well, I would be pissed if I am the worker)
“Auld Lang Syne” is commonly used by shops in Japan to announce that the shop is closing.
Hence, combining the music with the feeling of impending doom (arrival of the drone, that is), the company is hoping that this will render the employees unable to work.

Well, I guess this is one way to handle the “Karoshi”(death caused by overworking) situation in Japan.
However, just how effective can this be?
Although Japan has been trying to tackle the present overworking culture, it seems to be a deeply ingrained habit for a lot of Japanese workers.
“Even if this robotic harassment gets workers to leave the office, they will take work home with them if they have unfinished assignments,” said Scott North, professor of sociology at Osaka University.
Well, that’s true. There’s simply nothing stopping people from voluntarily overworking themselves.

That being said, I’m sure companies would love for their workers to do more work too, coz you know, revenue and all.
That’s especially true for us writers, you know. The more we write, the more the company earns. Though, I don’t think we will ever reach the stage of “karoshi”.
Stay strong, fellow office minions!
