Singaporeans have a dirty past time. We like to laugh cruelly at certain individuals who almost seem to want to be making fun of themselves, but probably just have oversimplistic narratives of themselves and the world.
Notorious Steven Lim and recent viral craze ‘Sheng The Rapper’ are examples. Many people hide behind their phones and computers, making jokes and trolling them online.
Although someone may have gone a little bit too far with Internet personality Kurt Tay, trolling him so badly that a police report was lodged.
Impersonation
One day, Kurt Tay received a text from a ‘reporter’. The so-called ‘reporter’ claimed that she once interviewed Tay, and wanted to invite Tay to be part of an episode on a new comedy series she was in charge of.
Tay was excited to join, and this person repeatedly assured Tay so that he would take the plunge.
The person had made sure that the facade kept going, despite the obvious costs that Tay was encouraged to undertake, making Tay bear costs of unpaid leave as well as transport fare.
After Tay reached Mediacorp and was unable to meet the reporter for two hours, then did this reporter reveal the plot.
As expected, the ‘superstar’ Kurt Tay was furious. He began a vulgar tirade on social media against the troll and eventually made a police report.
I know this looks like a ridiculous and hilarious situation so far, but because the troll impersonated a member of the Mediacorp staff, Mediacorp will also file an official report against the troll.
In the end, it looks like the troll may not be the one who got the last laugh.
Who Is Kurt Tay?
Have you ever heard of the infamous Kurt Tay? No? Here are some facts about Kurt Tay to catch you up to speed.
Kurt Tay is a challenge to describe. He is a ‘self-styled celebrity’.
Just like Steven Lim, he is ostentatious and attention-seeking, and walks around with his gaudy wrestling belts that he ‘won’ from competitions. He often posts unfiltered thoughts, which reveal parts of his life and the struggles he faces, albeit in a weird and controversial way.
He was also famous for his silicone breast implants when he was younger, which he has since removed.
Kurt Tay is, of course, then a subject of great amusement and trolling.
Bullying
I think the best way to put how the online community and trolls respond to characters like Kurt Tay is one word: bullying. It is quite obvious that individuals like them tend to have very simple perspectives on the world, almost child-like. They may not even comprehend your ridicule, and take their infamy to mean renowned fame.
However, to laugh at these people and make fun of their obvious deficiencies say more about us than about them. I’m not going to lie, their antics and behaviour are absolutely hilarious to me as well; but to take it further, to actually expend energy and time to make a mockery of these individuals just so that you have a good laugh, should not be conscionable.
We may say that these individuals are demented, but perhaps what is truly demented may be our civic sensibilities.
