Earlier this month, we wrote an article about the 10 best 11.11 deals this year.
One of the deals on the list was offered by e-commerce company Lazada, which was giving $6 off for every purchase of $60, as well as huge discounts and vouchers on a variety of products.
One of the promotions that some shoppers perhaps overlooked was their big giveaway – Lazada said shoppers who make purchases on their platform on Singles’ Day stand to win a condominium worth $1,000,000.
It seemed too good to be true, right?
Well, not quite.
Retired Hawker Won $1 Million Condo from Lazada 11.11 Giveaway for Spending Just $3.41
A 70-year-old retiree has won the keys to a one-bedroom condominium unit at Normanton Park, valued at S$1,000,000.
Mr Chow collected the winning golden key while playing Lazada’s Lazzie Star in-app game, and spent just S$3.41 on Aloe Vera Gel and a digital voucher for Nasi Lemak, according to a press release by Lazada.
The 70-year-old had been a hawker for 30 years before he retired, selling fish noodle soup to support his family of five.
A Lazada user since 2017, Mr Chow has been making more purchases since COVID-19 emerged, when the vulnerable were highly encouraged to stay at home. He now uses Lazada regularly to pick up daily home necessities, groceries, and skin care products for his family members.
Didn’t Believe He Won, Thought it Was a “Scam”
It was his daughter who had told Mr Chow about Lazada’s big 11.11 giveaway. She too had been playing Lazzie Star to collect Golden Keys in a bid to increase her chances of winning the condominium.
Mr Chow then started playing the game after some coaching from his daughter. He won five Golden Keys after reaching level 25 in the game.
The funny thing is that when he heard he had won, the retiree didn’t believe it at first, as he never thought he’d be lucky enough to win such a big prize.
“The good news about winning has not fully sunk in yet! Originally, I thought it was a scam when the Lazada team surprised me with the news. I have never been this lucky in my life! I could only be sure I was really the winner after verifying everything with Lazada’s customer service team,” he said.
According to Ismail Gafoor, CEO of PropNex Realty, the property boasts “extensive landscaping with an unblocked view of the cove pool and 110 lifestyle facilities” and sits on a “massive land plot of over 680,000 square feet”.
After serving hungry residents for three decades, Mr Chow certainly deserves to enjoy his retirement.
