Malaysia to Inspect Gardenia Factory Over Classic White Bread and Twiggies Choc-A-Lot Complaints

Malaysia’s Health Ministry will carry out follow-up inspections at a Gardenia Bakeries (KL) factory after receiving complaints of suspected food poisoning. The ministry named Gardenia Original Classic White Bread and Twiggies Choc-A-Lot as the main products it is looking into.

In a statement on Sunday (8 November 2026), the ministry said it was still waiting for laboratory results. The factory checks will assess whether Gardenia is complying with Malaysia’s Food Act 1983.

Leftover Products and Packaging Collected for Testing

The ministry said it had collected leftover products and their packaging for testing with the complainants’ permission. The batch numbers and expiry dates it received were incomplete, limiting its ability to trace the products involved.

The ministry said it would take enforcement action if it found evidence of a breach of the law or a food safety risk. It urged anyone in Malaysia who developed symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhoea after eating the products in question to seek medical attention immediately and report the matter to their nearest district health office.

Gardenia Says It Is Reviewing Production Records

In a separate statement on Sunday, Gardenia Bakeries (KL) said it had met a consumer who raised concerns and collected products for its own examination. The company said it was reviewing production records and quality checks, and would cooperate with the ministry’s investigation and factory inspections.

The ministry said Gardenia had told it that its internal checks found no changes to the recipes or departures from production procedures and food safety controls for the products in question. The ministry said the cause of the reported symptoms remained undetermined.
