What’s the worse thing you can do when you are being investigated for hurting another person?
Take a wild guess.
Attempting to run away is a good guess. So is feigning ignorance.
How about bribing the police?
Yeah, we all know that’s a bad idea.
But someone out there must’ve thought that it’s a good idea.
I mean, just yesterday, on 4th Dec, a Chinese national named Lei Yanchen was sentenced to 7 months’ jail for hurting another person and attempting to bribe a police officer.
According to Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), Lei committed the offences on 6th Aug this year.
Lei had been involved in a fight with a man named Zhong Bo, whom he suspected was having an affair with his wife. Lei had allegedly hit Zhong on the head with a “hammer-like object”.
(Doesn’t mean you have to hit everything, man)
While seeking medical treatment for Zhong at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, Lei attempted to bribe Sergeant Mervyn Pea Jia Wei, who was attending to the case, into letting him off the hook by stuffing a $50 note into his pocket.
For a bribe, that really isn’t a lot.
Hey, I’m not saying it would’ve worked if he had given the police more money. I just find the amount of the bribe to be a lot lower than expected, you know.
Anyway, Sergeant Mervyn Pea Jia Wei rejected the bribe (duh) and arrested Lei. The case was subsequently referred to CPIB.
FYI, anyone convicted of a corruption offence can be fined up to $100,000, jailed for up to 5 years, or both.
Holy moly. $100,000?! I never knew that corruption offences warranted such hefty fines. I wouldn’t have taken the bribe even if it was $5000.
Yeah, no wonder some people out there prefer to use the word “donation” instead, eh?
