Man Who Threw Dumbbells From 22nd Floor Of HDB Gets Jailed For A Month

Let me ask you a question: what are dumb-bells routinely used for?

Curls and weight-added exercises are probably some of the answers you will come up with.

But did you know that they could be used for other stuff as well?

Like, I don’t know, rage-throwing out of HDB blocks?

As ludicrous as it sounds, somebody actually did it.

On 11 April this year, part-time delivery assistant Jai Vicknesh Kandasamy, 35, had hurled dumb-bells and several other objects from the 22nd floor of an HDB block in Jalan Kayu, destroying the windscreen of a van.

The reason? He had apparently been ‘intoxicated’, and in a fit of rage threw the dumb-bells into Neverland.

What happened?

Vicknesh, Ms Jeya Jayaram, 32, and Mr Subramaniam Ellan, 29, hadĀ visitedĀ the home of Ms Jayaram’s former boyfriend, Mr Karhikeyan Murty, 32, on 11 April 2017.

Ms Jayaram asked Mr Karhikeyan to speak outside.

He initially obliged, but quickly made to return to his flat when he saw the two men.

Ms Jayaram wasn’t going to make it easy, however, as she landed a blow on Mr Karhikeyan before he could walk back in.

She then started to shout loudlyĀ and wanted to know what Mr Karhikeyan had been talking about her to others.

That was when Vicknesh snappedĀ and threw two dumb-bells, a chair, two bamboo poles, shoes and two laundry racks out of the HDB block.

The objects shattered a parked Toyota Hi-Roof van’s windscreen, which cost $700 for repair expenses.

When Sergeant Lee Jin Wei from Sengkang Neighbourhood Police Centre turned up to interview the trio, Vicknesh reprimanded him with a Tamil vulgar word for no less thanĀ fourĀ times.

Sentencing

Vicknesh was sentenced just yesterday (22 October 2017) to a month’s jail time for the offence. He was also handed a $800 fine (or four days’ jail by default), for the use of abusive language on a police officer.

District Judge John Ng was strict.

“Eighty percent of our population live in HDB flats. You are not throwing some tissue paper, toilet roll, but dumb-bells. It will be too late if you hit somebody. In this case, it hit a car and affected somebody’s livelihood.”

In Vicknesh’s defence, his lawyer said that he was intoxicated at the time, and was not thinking logically when he had performed the act.

For the rash act, Vicknesh could have been jailed for up to six months, and/or fined up to $2,500. For the use of abusive words, he could have been fined up to $5,000 and/or jailed for a maximum of 12 months.

Moral of the story

My mum used to tell me: “Hao Hao, don’t walk out in the open near HDB blocks. You never know the type of shit that comes falling on you.”

Being a cool kid, I was like: “Chill, mum. Nothing like that’s ever going to happen. You’re so lame, lameeeeee.”

Fast forward ten years later, and my mindset has totally changed.

Or to be more specific, after this article.

So folks, don’t walk in the open around HDB blocks.

You never know; some guy might be throwing a couple of dumb-bells out of the block like…
