McDonald’s Fish & Fries VS Sweet Chili Fish Burger: Are They Really Worth The Hype?

Last Updated on 2018-03-02 , 5:46 pm

McDonald’s chocolate pie might be stealing all the attention, with its oozy chocolate goodness and crispy, crunchy exterior, but the Fish & Fries & Sweet Chili Fish burger deserve just as much love, if not more.

Just a brief intro: the Fish & Fries is basically McDonald’s take on the age-old Fish & Chips concept, while the Sweet Chili Fish Burger’s pretty much an enlarged, spicier version of the Fillet O’ Fish.

Sounds interesting? Because we certainly did. Like… McDonald’s is offering fish & chips? We will take it!

And so, as per Goodyfeed customs, we set out for an honest to goodness…

FOOD REVIEW!

Appearance

The offerings might look real mouthwatering on the poster, but then again, so does everything else. Reality, however, could be quite contrary.

So… how does it look like in real life? (We forced our photographer to be brutally honest about it)

The full course meal (incidentally, the chocolate pie is da bomb):

Fish & Fries:

Sweet Chili Fish Burger:

Well, both have certainly passed the appearance test, that’s for sure. The battered fish looks to be fried to a perfect golden brown exterior, while the fries are just… fries.

The burger might look a bit messy (but that might be coz it was delivered over), but the fish looks well-cooked and appetising and the buns lightly toasted. You have to dig in deep to see the chili though.

But all in all, it’s a thumbs up for the exterior factor.

Taste

Both might have passed the appearance stage, but that still wouldn’t do jack shit if the new offerings taste like… shit. And so, we sent two brave (and very eager souls) to do some legit taste testing.

Fish & Fries:

Boon Hun: The fish might look really dry on the outside, but it’s surprisingly juicy on the inside. As a result it’s a perfect blend of dry and juicy, and the crunchy exterior just adds as a bonus.

Rating: 4/5

Would he try it again: Yes

Zhi Hao: Not bad. I would say it’s even better than Long John Silver’s fare, but that might be coz I’m biased against LJS. The exterior’s definitely hard and crunchy, just the way I like it. It’s kinda dry though, didn’t really taste the ‘juicy’ part. But then again it might be coz I was scoffing it down.

Rating: 3.5/5

Would he try it again: Yes

Sweet Chili Fish Burger:

Boon Hun: Savoury just about sums it up. The fish patty is great, and the sweet thai chili complements it perfectly. Damn, what a burger!

Rating: 4/5

Would he try it again: Yes

Zhi Hao: Tastes pretty good. Got to say it kinda melted in my mouth, and that’s a sensation you would expect from a class burger. The chili’s a bit spicy (maybe coz my spice tolerance is like shit), but it really adds on to the burger.

Rating: 3.5/5

Would he try it again: Yes

Consensus: Are They Worth The Hype?

Seeing how both of them have professed to go for the fare again, I would say:

It’s worth the hype.

And so, our advice is that you guys try it out, and check the quality for yourselves.

Although we’re pretty confident that you’ll walk away with a big smile on your face and cravings for more. 🙂
