McDonald’s Chocolate Pie: We Tried It & Here’s Our Verdict

A warm welcome to March!

What, wait? I thought we were just counting down to the New Year?

When I was younger, I wanted to grow up quickly. Now that I’m old, (ahem), older I mean, I kinda envy those who are young and rebellious. Anyone?

Okay, back to reality.

Last August, that’s about 6 to 7 months back, I wrote about the McDonald’s chocolate pie that went viral in Korea.

Tears flooded my eyes when I wrote about it because I felt a dagger right in my heart… the sight of the all so rich, gluey and sinful chocolate oozing out from the pie snapped in two but I couldn’t taste it.

So near yet so far.

But it’s now not far anymore. In fact, it’s so near it’s right beside me, on my desk! I swear this is the best thing that has ever happened to me in Goody Feed. Heh.

Anyway, my teammates gave me the honors to try the all-new addition to the McDonald’s menu…

Chocolate Pie! As always, remember, this is our expectation of it.

Then we have the reality.

Are you feeling nervous about the outcome? Here’s it and there’s no turning back.

Honestly, when I first grabbed hold of the box, I was on cloud nine.

Not an exaggeration at all (my dear haters) because I was waiting for this since I first wrote it last year. When I came across McDonald’s post on it, the first thing I did was to put a reminder on my phone to grab it after work today (1 March).

Unwrapping it… I was a little disappointed. It looks slightly burned on the outside, doesn’t it? Visual wise, it’s like a gold bar dropped into the mud and then left aside to dry.

Then I took a small bite…

And colleague number 1 said, “Celeste, I want to try leh.” Colleague number 2 came along and said, “Eh! Can I try?”

In my heart, I was screaming “YOU CANNOT TRY”. But then the words came out, “Of course can lah!”

Damn. Should have spoken the truth. That’s two bites of my chocolate pie gone. (Hmm, pardon my affection for chocolate pie, colleagues 1 and 2. I still love y’all.)

Actual review

It’s nice, you can try.

“Wah lao eh, what do you mean by it’s nice? We read until here to see these few words only ah?”

Kidding lah, friends. Thanks for reading up to this point.

Prior to eating this, I was stalking (sorry, creepy like that) McDonald’s Facebook post’s comments. Some commented that they tried it elsewhere and it was nothing special. One also remarked that the chocolate was like “cheap chocolate taste”.

If it was really “cheap chocolate taste”, then I must really adore this “cheap chocolate taste”.

The burnt-looking crust is similar to apple pie’s crust on the after-taste. But on the first bite, I would compare it to dark chocolate with a slight hint of bitterness.

I’m not a fan of dark chocolate but it was acceptable for me. As for the chocolate filling, it resembles one of the brands but I can’t point a finger at a specific name. Maybe Royce? Godiva?

It’s not too sweet, a perfect balance between milk chocolate and dark chocolate.
