Mercs Owner Triggered After Car Boot Scratched on Ceiling When Opened in MBS Car Park

On 12 November, a 48-year-old Mercedes owner surnamed Guan parked his vehicle in the Marina Bay Sand mall’s main parking lot.

What was supposed to be a mundane Saturday family shopping suddenly turned awful when he opened the rear compartment and got scratched.

After parking his car, he opened the rear compartment, and in doing so, it had unintentionally scraped the rivets on the iron frame two meters above.

At the time, he had only owned his Mercedes GLB 180 for four months

He explained to Shin Min Daily News that he had sent a request for reimbursement to the Sands Management through email.

Mall Management’s Response

The management, however, answered that they hold no legal duty for the compensation.

In an email, they explained that although what had happened was regrettable, they did have a height restriction bar displayed at the entrance of the car park, with the maximum allowable height being two meters.

They added that they had complied with the Construction Management requirements for the car park, as well as put up a notice board indicating the maximum limit.

Despite their explanations, as per usual rich-car-owner-fashion, Mr Guan still believes that the mall should be liable for any damage brought about.

e felt that it was unfair and raised the possibility of other car owners who might also experience a similar incident as him or possibly in the future.

Well, it seems like other car owners were smarter.

Knowing about the 2-metre limit, other car owners had parked their cars near the front of the parking space so that when their rear compartment was opened, the door would not hit the iron frame above.

In fact, this is also very commonly seen in HDB multi-storey car park, as some areas can be pretty tight.

Yeah, so maybe be more aware next time?
