SMRT might have a notorious reputation for its untimely breakdowns, even last weekend it made the news due to some flooding—you can read it here.
Apart from its breakdowns, what else do you think SMRT could improve on?
To be fair, SMRT has made efforts to make our rides more pleasant, like the installation of giant ceiling fans for stations located outdoors and increasing the frequency of trains during peak hours.
Now, they are going to make another effort to make our train rides even smoother.
Ever come across someone who holds up the line by placing their thick wallet—filled with a gazillion cards and receipts—while tapping out?
Or maybe you’re the someone.
Some won’t give up and would repeatedly try their luck before taking out their EZ-Link card.
Frustrating, isn’t it? Especially during peak hours, when you have places to be!
This problem might soon be a thing of the past.
According to The New Paper, yesterday, SMRT displayed their newest invention—hands-free fare gate at the Future of Transport convention.
WHAT?
No more tapping of your EZ-Link card!?
Fares will be paid automatically via your mobile device using Bluetooth technology or with a radio-frequency identification (RFID) card.
This new system would be able to detect your card as long as it is on you or in your bag!
All you got to do is to walk straight through the gantry, like walking through the automatic doors of a shopping mall.

This will be rolled out at selected train stations in 2018 for trial, near support centres for the physically disabled and in neighbourhoods with many senior folks.
If this trial is a success, this could be a dream for every passenger.
Imagine not rummaging through your bag and pockets finding for your EZ-Link card when you are nearing the control station.
But for now…
Please have your EZ-Link in your hand when tapping in or out and don’t try to be a smart alec by placing your wallet at the scanner.
