Health Minister Ong Ye Kung has finally responded to the NUH A&E miscarriage incident, and said that an investigation is in the works.
Followed Incident with Deep Concern, Discussed with DMS
In a Facebook post on 25 March, Mr Ong said that even while he was in Malaysia on a work trip, he had been following the incident with “deep concern”.
For those who may not know, the incident Mr Ong is referring to is the National University Hospital’s miscarriage case, where a pregnant woman waited in the emergency department for two hours, causing the death of her unborn child.
As a parent himself, Mr Ong said that he can fully understand the family’s anguish, and is very sorry to hear about their loss.
He added that he has discussed the matter with Singapore’s Director of Medical Services, Associate Professor Kenneth Mak.
MOH and NUH to Conduct Thorough Investigation
Noting that NUH has been in contact with the family and extending its fullest support, Mr Ong said that the Ministry of Health will work with NUH to conduct a thorough investigation of this incident.
He emphasized that MOH takes a serious view of such incidents, and will work to solve any lapses or shortcomings.
The results of the investigation will also be shared with the rest of the healthcare system, to ensure that such incidents will never happen again.

Should Continue Supporting Healthcare Workers
Mr Ong then revealed that there’s been increasing reports of abuse of healthcare workers recently. He reiterated the importance of supporting Singapore’s healthcare workers, no matter the outcome of the investigations.
This is especially given the pandemic crisis, which has put healthcare workers through a very challenging and difficult time. They have been doing their best to ensure the prompt attending of emergency cases, on top of managing COVID-19 patients and putting themselves at risk.
“Let’s continue to show them support and understanding, even as NUH fully investigates the matter.”
