We always look up to our parents as the ones who would protect us from any danger in the world. After all, they are our parents.
Unfortunately for this girl, her 43-year-old mother didn’t do what she was expected to do when she found out that her own son was raping his younger sister.
In fact, she allowed it to happen again and again.
According to court documents, the woman allegedly found semen stains on her daughter’s underwear back in 2010. The girl was only five years old at that time. The woman then asked her son if he had molested or “had sex” with the victim again, to which her son denied.
Despite knowing this fact, she did not protect her daughter from her son. Instead, she turned a blind eye to the sexual abuse that was happening to her daughter.
In June 2017, when the woman’s daughter was 12 years old and her brother was 20 years old, he raped her for the first time.
The sexual abuse continued between June 2017 and September 2017.
How The Situation Came to Light
In mid-October 2017, the girl told her mother that she missed her period. Fearing that her daughter had become pregnant, she bought a pregnancy test kit for her and it later tested positive.
Together with her son, they took the girl to a clinic for a check-up, and the doctor confirmed the pregnancy. He told the mother to bring the girl to a hospital so that she can have a thorough medical examination. He also advised her to file a police report.
As she was afraid that her son would be arrested if she were to bring her daughter to the hospital, she took her daughter to a clinic in Johor Bahru for an abortion in December 2017, but the doctor refused to do the procedure.
She told the girl to stop attending school so that no one would detect her pregnancy, but of course, the school started getting worried about the girl’s attendance and called the woman to find out what was going on. She lied and told the school that the girl wasn’t feeling well. She then tried to withdraw her from school.
Feeling that something was amiss, the school asked for a doctor’s note, and since she was unable to come up with one, the mother eventually told the school that her daughter was pregnant. The school principal then informed Child Protection Services, which filed a police report.
Mother Charged for Failing to Protect Daughter from Being Raped by Her Son
The woman was remanded on Monday and has been charged with five charges. These include intentionally omitting to give information on the criminal offence of rape and molestation of a minor, and for knowingly permitting her son to sexually abuse her daughter when she knew about it from as early as 2010.
She mentioned during the court hearing that she will be applying for legal aid.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Social and Family Development is arranging for the woman’s daughter to stay in a shelter.
The accused will have to attend another court hearing in November.
If one is found guilty of knowingly allowing the ill-treatment of a child, they could be sentenced to a jail term of four years and a fine of $4,000.
If one is found convicted of intentionally omitting to give information about an offence, they could be sentenced to a jail term of six months and a fine for each charge.
