While it might seem easy to bribe the children around you with some food or screen time to help you get something done, it’s probably pretty clear that trying to bribe an adult is much harder.
Especially if the adult’s a police officer.
Just yesterday (11 May), Krishna Rao Narisama Naidoo, 35, pleaded guilty to three charges for offences that involved bribery and drink driving.
He was jailed for four weeks, given a fine of $5,000 and was disqualified from driving for 30 months.
Since Krishna, a Malaysian, is unable to pay the fine, he was issued another five weeks of imprisonment. An additional charge was taken into consideration during sentencing as well.
And this might seem like your ordinary drink-driving crime, but there’s a pretty unique detail about this case.
Krishna tried to bribe a police officer to let him off when he was caught.
With $55.
What Happened
According to court proceedings, Krishna had drunk three cans of beer at home before going to his workplace, which was located at Pioneer Place, on 21 November last year.
He drank two more cans of beer at his workplace before riding his motorcycle home at 10pm.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Sunil Nair mentioned that Krishna also dozed off while riding along the Pioneer Road roundabout off the Ayer Rajah Expressway.
That caused him to lose control of his vehicle, and his motorcycle skidded.
A passer-by who saw the scene called the police, and the police went down to the area to look for Krishna.
There, the police officers realised that Krishna reeked of alcohol.
Admitted to Drink-Driving, Tried to Bribe Officers
Upon being questioned by the police officers, Krishna had no choice but to come clean with the fact that he indeed did drink alcohol.
He then told the officers “Please help. Please don’t summon me too much” in Malay, and even tried offering a $5 note to one of them.
Of course, the officers did not take the bribe.
Instead, they went on with the relevant proceedings. They interviewed him and carried out a breathalyser test on Krishna, which he failed.
They then proceeded to search him.
Krishna then took out a $50 note from his bag and approached the same officer with it.
He even told the officer, “You take this, we close the case, I go back home and sleep.”
The Sentencing
The DPP noted that the police officers did not budge even with Krishna’s bribe, and that he was arrested on the spot at the scene.
The DPP also sought a sentence of four to six weeks’ jail, a $5,000 fine and 30 to 36 months’ disqualification from driving for Krishna.

In his mitigation plea, Krishna pleaded with the judge for leniency, bringing up his family in the process.
According to him, his wife is pregnant and has headaches frequently.
During the sentencing, District Judge Eugene Teo acknowledged the fact that Krishna was a first-time offender and also took his personal circumstances into account.
“It must be very difficult for you, but I must emphasise the seriousness of the corruption charge,” the judge told Krishna.
In a statement released yesterday (11 May) by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau, those found guilty of a corruption offence may face up to a maximum of five years’ imprisonment, a maximum fine of $100,000, or both.
