Don’t cancel me for saying this, but we can’t deny it: Singaporeans love going to Malaysia to take advantage of the amazing exchange rate, and all the things that are cheaper and (arguably) nicer: food, nail services, hair services, you name it.
Who would have thought that a shooting could occur in our beloved neighbouring country?
Here’s What Happened
The shooting occurred on Saturday, 8 February 2025, at Setia City Mall in Setia Alam, Selangor.
The incident first started at around 10pm, when the suspect entered the shopping mall and approached a cleaner. The cleaner had been storing cleaning equipment on level P1 at the mall.
The cleaner had asked the suspect to move his belongings.
Like a kid throwing a temper tantrum when asked to do something he didn’t want to, this triggered the shooter to open fire.
In a press conference, Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said that the victim, who is a foreign national in his thirties, sustained injuries to his leg and buttocks.
Despite his injuries, the cleaner managed to move to seek help.
Several footages on social media show him in apparent pain and distress, holding on to his legs. Some surrounding individuals were helping him press on to his wounds, presumably to stop the bleeding.
He was rushed to Shah Alam Hospital and is now in stable condition.
According to Hussein, the suspect is believed to have fired four shots at the cleaner.
Afterwards, the gunman ran to level P2 in the mall and began firing more shots, breaking a glass stairwell window and a sliding door in the process.
At around 10.50pm, the police were informed of the situation.
In an attempt to escape the scene, the suspect headed to the carpark, where he tried to hail down a car of a mall patron. However, the mall patron did not stop.
Just like your ex, the suspect could take “no” as an answer, for he fired a shot at this car in response.
Next, the suspect changed his target and approached another car, a Perodua Ativa.
The driver of the Perodua Ativa was held at gunpoint, as the suspect demanded him to drive out of the mall and drop him off near the Pandamaran exit of the Kesas Expressway. He then continued fleeing on foot.
The police have recovered more than 10 bullet casings at the crime scenes.
Fortunately, there was only one casualty from the incident, that is, the cleaner that was shot.
The mall has already resumed operations as usual.
More About the Suspect
Hussein has shared that the suspect has a criminal record, with 11 criminal and drug-related offences.
The suspect is is male in his thirties.
According to an interview with Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain by the Malaysian National News Agency, their investigations revealed that the suspect may have been under the influence of drugs during the shooting.
The motive of the shooting is still unclear, though there were reports that it may have been linked to a potential goldsmith robbery.
It is also unclear how the suspect had managed to obtain the pistol, considering Malaysia’s strict gun ownership laws.
Eyewitness accounts
Several eyewitnesses have uploaded footages of the incident on TikTok and reddit, showing families of mall patrons rushing, presumably away from the sound of the gunshots.
