Are you a Singaporean that loves to travel? Do you love travelling to Thailand?
Well if you tick the boxes above, I’ve got great news for you!
From August 20 onwards, you can use the Automated Gate (Auto Gate) at Suvarnabhumi Airport to enter Thailand.
And guess what? We are the “first country” to be granted access to this service!
This comes after Thailand declared that it will “start using Auto Gate to perform immigration check for foreign visitors to enter the Kingdom of Thailand by air”.
Other countries might be added in the future, according to the Immigration Bureau of Thailand.
How does it work?
Singapore travellers who opt to use the Auto Gate do not have to do a preliminary registration with the Thai Immigration Office anymore.
At the Auto Gate, the system will memorize passenger information and fingerprint details for verification purposes on future trips.
It can also be “linked to airlines’ check-in systems to verify passengers’ identities“.
Only for tourism purposes
The Auto Gate passport scanners, which was previously for Thai Nationals only, can only be utilized by visitors entering Thailand with tourist intentions. For other reasons, visitors would need to apply for a visa and undergo the normal immigration checking process.

Why is Singapore first?
According to the embassy, Singapore was selected to be the first to use Thailand’s Auto Gate based on “an analysis of security and on a reciprocal agreement, as Singapore is now considering allowing Thai nationals to use its automatic gates.”
The Auto Gate might be implemented in Thailand’s other airports in the future too – considerations include Don Mueang, U-tapao and Phuket.
I, for one, am really excited for this new service, because the last time I went to Thailand, I was stuck at the Immigration barrier for a long while.
With this latest function, everything will be way easier!
And speaking from personal experience, I’m pretty sure that’s something every Singaporean would take.
Because Singaporeans like everything free and easy.
