On 28 April, a NUS professor was fired due to sexual misconduct with a student.
The professor is Mr Ethan Putterman, a former associate professor at NUS’ political science department.
According to TODAYOnline, the professor had admitted his mistake last month and offered to resign.
Putterman said that “everything was demonstrably consensual and, after admitting it, I resigned from NUS (on 23 March) and (NUS) accepted it.”
Suspension From Work
The professor had been suspended from work while investigations about the complaint made against him about allegations of misconduct continued, said NUS on Thursday (28 April).
According to Putterman, he had been fired and the incident has been made public despite his “almost 21 years of service to the university.”
However, Putterman continued that he’s “not bitter” about the situation.
“We all make mistakes and life goes on. I wish everyone the best. Honestly.” said Putterman.
Updates From NUS
On Thursday (28 April), an NUS spokesperson said that the Committee of Inquiry (COI) had “determined the staff’s actions constituted inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour towards the student, hence breaching the code of conduct for NUS staff.”

Putterman’s profile page has since been removed from the NUS website as well.
The complaint of misconduct was made by the student as early as 3 March. The student alleged that the act happened on campus.
The student also made a police report on her own accord.
Past NUS Staff Terminations Due To Misconduct
Since 2020, NUS has sacked two professors for inappropriate behaviour and sexual misconduct.
A third professor left NUS before investigations concluded. Later, the professor was found guilty of acting inappropriately during a professional setting by hugging a colleague without consent.
Another research employee was also fired after two students reported that they were sexually harassed by a staff member. The employee had touched a student’s knees and made inappropriate remarks.
