I had to read this piece of news a hundred times to process what’s really happening as reported by Channel NewsAsia on 20 December.
So allow me to share the facts with you. For friends who are active on dating sites, or know of anyone who frequent them, please read on.
What’s happening?
According to CNA and the police, unlicensed moneylenders have upgraded their methods to pick up ‘runners’. Here’s their new tactic: making use of unsuspecting social media users to harass debtors.
This means that behind that ‘gorgeous hot babe’ profile you’re talking to is actually a loanshark. They are posing as women on sites like OKCupid and Locanto looking for male partners.
After you’re hooked on, they would then proceed to ask you for a meet up. An address will be provided, but bear in mind that these addresses actually belong to one of their debtors.
So if you find yourself being asked to take photos and videos at the door once you’ve arrived at the ‘meet-up location’, you’re most likely made a victim and fallen into the trap of these loansharks.
The debtors will then be alerted by their moneylenders that these male subjects (like you) are their ‘runners’ and have arrived at their doorstep to harass them.
What should you do?
Please call the police or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 if you suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
And of course, if you’re still engaging on matchmaking, dating or social networking sites, please take note of the following measures:
- Be wary when befriending unknown people
- Arrange for meet-ups at a public area
- If in doubt of the other party’s intentions for a meet-up, do not agree to their requests
Stay safe & be on your guard at all times. And of course, if you want to continue playing the game, play it smart.
