The football great once said: “Wherever you go, there are three icons that everyone knows: Jesus Christ, Pelé, and Coca-Cola.”
While he may not physically be with us now, his legacy will live on.
Brazilian Legend Pele Dies at Age 82 After Battle With Cancer
Pelé, the Brazillian football legend, passed away from colon cancer on Thursday (29 December) at 82.
In late November this year, Pelé was admitted to the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital in São Paolo, Brazil, for his colon cancer complications.
As his cancer progressed and spread to more parts of his body, his organs started to shut down, and his health worsened.
On Thursday, he died after multiple organ failures.
Pele’s Name
Undoubtedly, Pelé left behind an excellent name for not only himself but also Brazil.
He’s accomplished many feats in his life, most notably winning three World Cups in 1958, 1962, and 1970.
That’s impressive enough, but it’s more impressive that he’s the only one who ever did that.
Nicknamed “the King,” Pelé was the first-ever international football icon and did much to skyrocket the sport’s popularity in Brazil and around the world.
As the top goal-scorer for Brazil, he scored 77 goals in 92 games. Pelé is tied with Neymar, who scored 77 goals as well but in 124 international appearances.
At a club level, he was Santos Fc’s all-time top goal-scorer with 643 goals in 659 games. From 1956 to 1974, Pelé played for Santos, his first football club.
