In the past, fires were usually caused by mischievous kids or electrical issues; with proper guidance and proper care, they can be avoided.
But recently, a new threat has emerged: fires from personal mobility devices (PMDs).
Or to be more specific, fires from PMD batteries and its charger.

Earlier this month, it’s reported that the number of fires involving e-scooter shot up by nearly 350%: that’s one heck of a spike.
In 2017 alone, there were at least 34 cases of PMD fires—and remember, PMD is still something relatively new.

Now, if you’re not distracted by Diana Ser’s beauty and have watched through the video, you’ll realize the risk of a fire while using third-party and cheap battery packs is very high.
But it seems like people are still using them.
Just today, over in Toa Payoh, a fire broke out at Block 103.
Fortunately, an off-duty SCDF officer, Staff Sergeant Yahafiz Mustafa, saw it. He grabbed a fire extinguisher and kicked the door open to put out the fire.

Upon that, the SCDF crew arrived to rescue a man in the unit who was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

SCDF was alerted to a fire at a first floor unit of block 103, Lor 1 Toa Payoh, at about 3:20pm. An off-duty SCDF officer from Tuas View Fire Station, Staff Sergeant Yahafiz bin Mustafa noticed the fire. He grabbed a fire extinguisher, kicked the door to the unit open and put out the fire which involved a Personal Mobility Device (PMD).
The occupant, a Chinese man in his 40s was rescued by SCDF crew and conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for smoke inhalation.
Preliminary investigation findings indicated that the fire originated from the battery pack of a PMD which was being charged at the time.
SCDF would like to remind members of the public on the prevention of PMD fires. The following are some fire safety tips.
