Teen Crowdfunds for His Poly Fees After Parents Think That ‘Poly Has No Future’

Many of us here in Singapore are fortunate that we have the time and money to continue our education after we leave secondary school.

After all, there are teens who need to get jobs immediately after to support their families who are struggling financially.

Parents naturally want their children to succeed, and they see education as a great way to achieve that success.

But not all parents are like that, of course. Some may even stop paying their child’s school fees midway through their course if they think it’s not worth it.

Teen Crowdfunds for His Poly Fees After Parents Think That ‘Poly Has No Future’

At least that’s what happened to Twitter user @lo3ana17, who made an appeal for help on the platform last Thursday (18 Nov).

The user said he’s a 17-year-old student who used to study at Republic Polytechnic, but had to stop because his parents stopped paying for his school fees.

“I’ve tried almost everything to get back to school but most of it requires my parents’ signature or approval,” he said.

“So basically I need to save up money in order to continue school and it’s really embarrassing for me to be making this a public scenario but I actually need help from people.”

He explained that his parents are not keen on him studying in a polytechnic because they have an “old generation mentality where they always say poly has no future”.

Currently Working as Safe Distancing Ambassador For Extra Cash

Speaking to AsiaOnethe teen said he is currently working part-time as a Safe Distancing Ambassador at a hospital to save up for his school fees.

He enrolled in an infocomm and security-related diploma course in April 2021, but only completed the first semester as his parents stopped paying his school fees.

It turns out that his parents wanted him to take the A-level as a private student or in an international school instead. His dad initially didn’t mind him getting educated at polytechnic, but changed his mind after his mother threatened to return to Sri Lanka if he paid the boy’s school fees.

Now, the 17-year-old has to raise around $6,200 to pay his course fees for each academic year as a Singapore permanent resident. To make matters worse, he has to pay a penalty of over $8,000 for not completing his course, as he was awarded the Ministry of Education Tuition Grant.

In addition to asking for help online – his post has been retweeted over 700 times – the teen has also reached out to MPs as well as his polytechnic, which later said it will provide assistance.

Within two days, the teen managed to crowdfund $490.

Let’s hope he gets the money he needs to continue his education.
