This Pub Gives You 25% Discount if You Don’t Use Your Phone There

Everything has its pros and cons.

And nothing sums it up quite like the technological advancements of this age.

Sure, technology is improving every single year. In the early 2000s, having a phone was a privilege, an honour. In 2018, however, having a phone (a smartphone at that) is considered normal, a routine.

Yet you can help but question: at what price?

With smartphones that can do practically everything, humans have started to forgo communication in favour of their little savvy gadgets.

Social interaction no longer takes precedence. After all… why interact when there’s something in your hands that can do the same thing for you (online chatting)?

As such, at the rate technological advancements are heading, the world’s facing two prospective futures:

1. A futuristic globe with self-driving hoverchairs.

Zero human communication also a.k.a. Wall-E

Which is kind of a scary thought really, seeing how humans are conditioned to be social creatures. Without proper social interaction…

One wonders how the future will turn out.

As it turns out, I’m not the only one hesitant about the future.

A pub in Wrexham has offered 25 percent off your food bill, on one condition:

You gotta surrender your phone at the door and enjoy an evening without it.

In short, zero social media.

Mobile Free Monday

Customers at The Fat Boar pub and restaurant in Wrexham will receive 25 percent off their food bill, provided they give up their phones at the entrance and proceed without it.

Dubbed Mobile Free Monday, it was the brainchild of Fat Boar Director Rich Watkin, and is being backed by his team in Wrexham, including General Manager Mark Finley and Restaurant Manageress Jade Darlington.

Thereafter, the phones will be locked away in the cash boxes on the table, with staff overlooking the keys. So no security issues there.

Positive reception

The response was instant; within the first hour of disclosure, more than 100 comments have been posted, with many customers challenging one another to give it a shot.

In the next 24 hours, the video would go on to garner near 3,000 views, and it has since collected a cool 92,000 with many ‘challenging’ their family and friends to it.

‘I am the first to admit that I am constantly glued to my mobile phone,” Rich said. “We all have busy lives and they can be a fantastic way to keep in touch with everything we need to run our hectic schedules.

‘But I couldn’t help but think it would be nice to encourage some of our loyal customers to make the most of an evening out with us and escape from all the constant ‘bing bing’ of information which these little devices throw at us.

‘We strive to provide a vibrant, fun and engaging atmosphere at both our pubs. We often have live music on, we have a delicious menu to choose from and a great range of real ales, wines, speciality gins and cocktails which means there is everything here necessary for a great night out.”

‘Mobiles can often be a real distraction and stop us from just sitting among family and friends and simply having a good conversation and that’s why I came up with the idea.’

Restaurant Manageress Jade Darlington agreed and added: ‘We all see people sitting together at tables, waiting for their food without talking and looking at their phones.

‘I think we all feel a certain amount of pressure to be constantly checking emails, social media, texts and all the other messaging on our phones.

‘But if we can do something to encourage people to put their phones down and concentrate solely on one another and the fun night out they are having with us, then I think that’s a really positive thing.’

Trial

The innovative system is currently on trial at The Fat Boar’s Wrexham pub. If successful, their Mold eaterie on Chester Street will adopt the same system too. Incidentally, tables must be booked in advance to apply for Mobile Free Monday.

For more information, you can dial the eatery at 01978 354201.

Cool idea

I won’t deny; I’m one of them people perpetually glued to their mobile phones, 24/7.

But I would definitely give the pub a shot, and it’s not entirely for the Mobile Free Monday. As much as I enjoy a peaceful night alone, live music, delicious food and healthy communication do appeal to my palate.
