Due to the pandemic and the high number of cases that result in more safety measures being implemented, the stress levels of many people have increased significantly. This may cause some people to lose their temper more easily, and may sometimes even take it out on people who are just trying to do their job and make a living.
A 50-second long video has been making its rounds on social media after a user posted it to the Complaint Singapore Facebook group on 24 July.
Man Verbally Abused Staff at Punggol McDonald’s
A man was seen in the video verbally abusing a staff member at the Oasis Terraces Mcdonald’s outlet in Punggol.
The video starts off in the middle of the altercation, where the man shouts “Enough!” at a female manager.
As he was holding onto a receipt, it seemed like he was waiting for his takeaway order and was getting impatient. He was heard demanding a refund loudly, and this caught the attention of many of the other staff members.
Despite his shouts, the female manager remains calm and composed and simply asks him why he was being abusive and loud.
She then mentions that she will call the police, and asked for his name and his phone number, but he refused to give her either of his details as he said the police would call him.
He rudely points at her, putting all the blame on her for his loudness, saying that she wasn’t listening to him in the first place.
It seemed like this was not the first time that this was happening too, as the female manager could be heard saying that he behaved like this every time he was here. This sentence sent him into a rage, causing him to hurl vulgarities at the lady.
He said, “Every time your a** man, every time.”
He then proceeds to use the F-word on her, which caused the male manager at the counter to look up in surprise.
The female manager asks him once more for his number so that she could call the police, but he refused. Having put up with enough, she finally walks away, telling him to explain it to her colleague instead.
The whole time that the man was berating her, the female manager never once lost her cool and continued to address him as “Sir”.
You can view the video below, but do note that vulgarities can be heard.
Abuse is “Uncalled For”; Netizens Ask For Actions From Authorities
The user who shared the video wrote in his post that hurling vulgarities at service staff was “uncalled for”, which many people agreed to as seen in the comments.
Many were saying that no matter what the situation, one should never abuse anyone else.
One also said that even if you may be hungry from waiting for your food, you should not be aggressive towards service staff.
With the current situation where only takeaway and delivery are available, it is not a surprise that these restaurants would be very busy preparing loads of orders.
Other netizens also tagged Mcdonald’s and asked for action to be taken against the man, especially since Mcdonald’s is known to have a zero-tolerance policy on abusive customers.
Back in March 2018, another customer also hurled vulgarities at Mcdonald’s staff members and the fast-food chain subsequently released a statement saying that its employees do not deserve to be shouted at.
Some also requested for the outlet to submit a police report with this video as evidence.
Police Investigations Ongoing
Many would probably be relieved to find out that a police report has indeed been filed on the grounds of intentional harassment.
The investigation is still ongoing so there isn’t much information released yet. Hopefully, the man will learn from his lesson not to do this again as nothing good can ever come from being abusive.
Many service staff members are just trying to do their job, and while we may be paying customers, it doesn’t give us the right to think that we are above them and therefore, entitled to take our anger out on them.
Kudos to the female manager who handled the situation so well despite how stressful and hurtful it must have been to be in that altercation.
