Recently, Google released the most-searched terms in Singapore, and it’s no surprise that the top search for trending local news is sadly the fiery car accident at Tanjong Pagar in Feb this year. It gripped the nation due to the tragic circumstances surrounding the crash and graphic footage of the accident.
Ms Raybe Oh Siew Huey, the girlfriend of one of the people in the car, was also seen running towards the flaming car and ended up suffering severe burns on 80% of her body.
Given such a tragic event, it’s understandable that Ms Oh kept to herself, but the brave lady isn’t going to let circumstances control her life; in a series of Instagram stories this morning (11 Dec), she decided to answer some questions posed by netizens.
Raybe Oh‘s Sharing of Her Recovery Journey and Her Life in a Q&A Session
In the first story, she shared an image of herself and presumably a teacher, telling others that she is from Malaysia and had studied there during her secondary school days.
She then shared her recovery journey in the next story.
After the accident, she was hospitalised for four months, and during that period, the goal was merely to save her life. In addition to the burns, in which she went through 32 surgeries for skin graft and wound cleaning, her respiratory tract was also injured, which means she couldn’t breathe on her own for a few days. In addition, she also came down with “life-threatening pneumonia”.
She shared that during this period, her mother was crying a lot.
In the next story, she shared why she’s back in the hospital: it was to do a flap surgery because a thick scar is affecting its normal function.
That’s not all for her: she would still need to go for more reconstructive surgeries next year.
In another story, someone asked how long she’s been with her fiancé. She said they’ve been together for about three years, and she never regretted trying to save him.
As for the hospital bills, the final bills came out to be a whopping $538,057—that’s more than half a million dollars.
However, thankfully, the bill is mostly covered by insurance because she bought rider for her MediShield Life.
Do note that in the past, if you’ve bought rider for your MediShield Life plan (commonly known as hospitalisation or health insurance policy), you won’t need to pay even a single cent should you need to claim. However, nowadays, you would still need to pay up to a cap of $3,000—which is, of course, still reasonable considering that if not, she’d need to pay half a million dollars.
She then shared what she’d do once she’s fully recover: to bring her mother to places she wants to go.
The bad news is that because of her injuries, her voice has been affected so she might not be able to sing again.

In a moving story in Mandarin, she admitted that she thought of giving up while she was in ICU due to the pain, but persisted after seeing her mother’s continual sobbing. She said that it’s her mother who spurred her on.
In addition, she also posted an image of herself with this caption in Mandarin, “Everything can be overcome; there’s no going back.”

What Happened
At around 5:30am on 13 Feb this year, residents in the vicinity of Tanjong Pagar Road heard the roar of a car’s engine.
The car involved in the accident, a BMW M4 coupe, was seen speeding along Tanjong Pagar Road at the time.
Eyewitnesses say the car then slammed into a vacant shophouse previously occupied by Five Oars Coffee Roasters and burst into flames.
Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene, but it was too late; all five men on board were pronounced dead at the scene.
Those who died included Mr Long and Eugene Yap, both 29, Elvin Tan Yong Hao, 28, Teo Qi Xiang, 26, and Gary Wong Hong Chieh, 29.
Ms Oh raced towards the burning wreckage in order to save her boyfriend and emerged 10 seconds later engulfed in flames.
Not long before the tragic accident, Mr Long and Ms Oh had applied for a flat together.
Mr Long’s 62-year-old father previously said that while he’s struggling to come to terms with his son’s death, he was also affected by Ms Oh’s serious injuries.
“I treat her as my own daughter and I hope that she will be safe,” he said. “She is really a very good girl, and we will do our best to take care of her.”
