Teachers in Singapore tend to have a very wide job scope.
From teaching the student and helping them understand the lesson to becoming their “parents” in school to becoming an events manager, every teacher holds a very strong responsibility in the growth of their students.
Although this is the general consensus for a full-time teacher, relief teachers are often time tasked with the same responsibilities.
Generally, when students get rowdy and cause problems for the teacher, they will be punished for it to help them learn from their mistakes.
However, a recent viral Instagram post by a relief teacher has shown that schools will also take action on teachers who apparently “do not perform their duties well”.
Viral Post Shares About Incident
In the viral Instagram post by Celine, who is a relief teacher who teaches Mathematics and Science, she shared that her job has been going very well ever since she joined that school.
However, a small fight of five minutes among students that took place in her relief class on 21 Sep changed that.
This is an unusual situation but it still happens once in a long while.
After the student broke off from their scuffle, Celine approached them to question them on their actions.
Celine then told the class monitor to pass the acquired information to the class’s form teacher.
However, what shocked her was a phone call from the discipline mistress the next day, who mentioned that Celine’s response to the fight was “unprofessional” and that she was not proactively doing her job as a teacher to prevent or stop the fight according to the footage on the CCTV camera.
In her defence, Celine mentions that at the point when the fight started, she was seated and that the CCTV did not capture the sound of the environment.
Following the call, Celine learned from the school that her teaching contract had been terminated due to the incident.

Allegedly No SOPs to Handle Such Situation
Feeling confused and speechless, Celine shares that relief teachers did not go through any form of training that helps them to handle such situations and that there are no Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for handling such an incident.
She further goes on to mention that she did indeed apologise for not handling the situation in the best possible way but feels that the school did not handle the situation well, especially dismissing her without giving her a chance to reason.
Apparently, Celine requested for a meeting to straighten things out with the school.
However, even after a week since her request, she has yet to hear from the school.
School Could Have Handled Situation better
In the final two slides of her post, Celine mentions the school mishandled the incident and humiliated her.
She mentions that the school was simply trying to find an easy way out by making her the scapegoat so that it is easier for them to explain to the student’s parents.
If she did not request the class monitor to inform the form teacher about the incident, none of this would have happened, said Celine, who adds that being honest did not help her get a second chance although she was not the only one at fault.
Celine further goes on to state that it was ironic that the school advocates core values such as respect and yet dismissed her without a legitimate reason over a phone call, citing that they have “failed to walk the talk”.
