Remember S’pore Cat Museum? They’re Closing Down In June & Looking For People To Adopt Their Cats

Singapore might be unnecessarily hot and demanding, but even then it still has its positive points. One of them, rather coincidentally, is the fact that Singapore isn’t just brimming with cats.

It’s practically filled with them.

But as much as we love cats, we can’t exactly stare and play with all the wild cats we come across. Apart from the insignificant notion that they might just land some claw marks on our faces, it’s just kind of… rude. You won’t want someone to do the same thing to you, would you?

Which is why the Cat Museum is so special.

For the first time (or at least in Singapore), you can legitimately ogle and satisfy all your inner feline fantasies, without the fear of being judged or reported.

But… it seems that all good things have to come to an end eventually.

Singapore’s only cat museum is set to close it’s doors, three years after it first opened them to the public.

What happened?

The cat museum, which currently runs out of the second floor of a pre-war shophouse in Purvis Street, actually moved out of the third and fourth floors in September last year after a land dispute.

The founder of the Cat Museum, Jessica Seet, had argued with authorities over the use of its upper floors for the museum’s cat shelter and adoption centre. Subsequently, the landlord decided not to prolong Seet’s lease at the shophouse altogether.

As a result, without a place to accommodate the cats in sights, the former Gold 90.5FM radio deejay had no other alternative but to close down the museum.

Incidentally, the museum’s lease on its premises is set to be over in five months, and the topic priority right now, according to Seet, is “to find homes for two dozen cats and kittens”.

While the resident cats (which are named after top hollywood stars like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) are set to head home with Seet and a few volunteers at the end of June, the rest will have to find new homes.

The museum actually called for potential adopters on its social media pages earlier this month, but so far, only one kitten has been taken to a new home.

And with the deadline approaching ever closer, it has become a case of urgency to relocate the remaining 24 cats and kittens.

If you’re interested, or want to find out more, you can pay the museum a visit at 8 Purvis St #02-02, 188587.

The next chapter

Apparently, it might not actually be the end of the cat museum.

“This is something that we really hope we can continue. This place has become so much more than just about the cats, because we have so many amazing volunteers from all walks of life … coming out in force to run this place,” Seet told Channel News Asia.

On Thursday (25 Jan), she started a campaign to raise S$1 million, half of which would go to a down-payment for a new place for the establishment.

Incidentally, the landlord would not be returning their S$21,000 rental deposit, quoting “unreasonable repairs”.

End of the year

Seet hopes that the museum’s next home would be located in the Civic District, citing it’s accessibility for visitors and potential adopters. Additionally, should the fundraising work out well, she wants to kickstart the business again at the end of the year.

“This time we will work very closely with MND (Ministry of National Development),” said Seet. She will also check on the proper licenses needed, to avoid any future dispute issues.

And there you have it, folks. The Cat Museum might not be gone for good, but that’s really down to the fundraising and location issues.

Meanwhile, you can assist them by adopting a cute, friendly cat at the premise! If you’re a cat lover, or someone who has always wanted to own a cat…

Why not, right?
