Imagine this: you’re in a bus, minding your own business and watching your favourite YouTube video on your phone when you look up and see that the bus driver is holding on to this.
And worse, he took a sip, like he’s in a pub. Heck, even people in a pub don’t drink like that.
Think that only happens in movies? You’re wrong. That’s what happened last year on 29 June, between 4:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., on a bus that travelled between Shenton Way and Yio Chu Kang.
Yesterday, former SBS bus driver Nagibullah Raja Saleem pleaded guilty to the charges of driving in a rash manner, drink-driving, and using his mobile phone when bus was moving.
Well, he has to. There’s a CCTV evidence of him drinking his Vodka six times, and there were passengers to witness his daring stunts.
Other than drinking while driving, he even fell asleep at a traffic light…for one full minute. After that, he somehow managed to doze off when the bus is moving.
Now, if that’s not bad enough, he beat six red lights—one wonders how he managed to avoid an accident even when beating six red lights.
To add on to his offences, he even drove against traffic in town, which prompted the passengers to, well, “wake up his idea” by alerting him.
And through the journey, the passengers were confronting him about his condition, but he continued to drive.
After the first trip, he was supposed to drive the bus, this time as “off-service” (not for passengers) to Shenton Way. For the weirdest reason ever, a passenger apparently boarded it, and he was dropped off shortly.
Wait, did someone just board an “off-service” bus driven by a drunk driver? And alighted like a boss?
Eventually, when he reached Shenton Way Terminal and avoided a few more accidents (one, he was driving against traffic again and two, he nearly crashed into another bus), the police arrived and arrested him.
He was supposed to start his shift at 3:30 p.m., and a few hours before that, he had been drinking. When he was arrested, it was about 9:00 p.m., and even during the time of his arrest, his alcohol levels were 2.4 times the legal limit.
You can imagine how drunk he was from 3:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
And without even me saying, you should know this: Nagibullah has since been fired.
SBS Transit has since tightened their SOP after the incident. The spokesperson said, “We do not take the safety of our commuters and fellow road users lightly. In fact, we have zero tolerance for such reckless behaviour and Nagibullah was dismissed from service following the incident.
“In this instance, Nagibullah had declared and was checked to be fit enough to drive for the day when he started his shift in the morning. This is required under our Standard Operating Procedure. As a tightened measure following the incident, we now require our bus captains, who have longer breaks of several hours in between their trips, to complete a second declaration form stating that they are fit to resume their duty. A dedicated staff will also be on duty to verify the state of the bus captain as declared in his or her form.”
Fortunately, no one was hurt during the entire event, though we had to give kudos to the many alert drivers who managed to avoid Nagibullah’s bus.
