Sometimes, life and death can really be determined in a second.

This Monday (3 Jan), three pedestrians were centimetres away from being collided by a SBS Transit bus that was speeding along in spite of the red traffic light signal overhead.

Talk about close shaves.

Kept on their Toes

On a Facebook post shared by Ben Chia Lor, a car’s dashboard camera caught a scene of a near-accident along Jurong East Avenue 1 on 28 Dec at around 6:10pm.

Lest you’re not aware, that stretch of road probably has the most number of traffic lights in Singapore.

A father holding his daughter’s hand and a woman were crossing the road on a green light, when a SBS Transit Bus abruptly appeared in view, heedless of traffic laws. The large vehicle would have hit the pedestrians, had it not been for their quick responses of taking a pre-emptive step back.

The video has now gained more than 30,000 views online, with comments of outrage filling the comment section below, condemning the bus driver’s actions.

SBS’ Speedy Reaction

The Public Transport Operator’s Senior Vice-President of Corporate Communications, Ms. Tammy Tan, swiftly stepped up with a response, first voicing that she was thankful that no one was injured in the incident and offered her apologies for any distress caused.

She followed by saying that “stern disciplinary action will be taken against the bus captain”, which is overall a satisfactory response that everyone wants to hear, especially since public bus drivers should know better than to commit such dangerous acts.

According to the Road Traffic Act 1961, Section 65 concerns the driving without due care or reasonable consideration. It states that the offender of Section 65 (should there be no deaths or injuries) “will be liable to a fine not exceeding $1,500 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or to both”.

Judging from the video itself, it seems like their driving was done with any due care or reasonable consideration when they were gunning for the red light.

All things considered though; it’s fortunate that nothing bad happened.
