I actually made a trip to Sim Lim Square just a month back. Well, buying things online is undeniably a convenient process and all, but it’ll still take a few days for your goods to arrive.
For someone like me who depends on my computer to make a living, I simply cannot function without my trusty laptop. That being said, I had to get a laptop charger fast since mine decided to die on me out of the blue.
Since Sim Lim Square is just a quick train ride away(all glory to Downtown Line!), I decided to visit the fabled Sim Lim Square.
(And boy should I have bought a backup charger and adapter online)
I was in quite a rush, since I had to finish my workload for the day before 6 pm. Hence, after visiting a couple of stores, I decided to go with the cheapest option I had—
—S$68
OH COME ON, THE SAME THING’S ONLY SLIGHTLY OVER S$30 IF I BUY IT ONLINE!
But I really don’t have the time to argue, since my editor is already breathing down my neck. Luckily, I did eventually manage to finish my work before 6 pm. But this really made me wonder if shopping at Sim Lim Square’s really worth it.
And I believe this is what most Singaporeans feel about Sim Lim Square these days too.
According to a report by Zaobao, despite the improving reputation of Sim Lim Square, the number of customers are not increasing at all. In fact, the number of customers are still decreasing.
According to an unnamed shop owner in Sim Lim Square, many embassies have allegedly issued warnings regarding Sim Lim Square, telling tourists not to shop there.
Aside from the bad reputation created by scums like Jover Chew, shop owners in Sim Lim Square also have to deal with stiff competition from online businesses.
Many shop owners have also agreed that online shopping has provided consumers with more options, discouraging them from going to a physical store.
However, there are still some things I would rather get from a physical store—
Like laptops and cameras.
Heck, I just feel like it’s safer, you know? Besides, more than half the time, online sets don’t actually come with any warranty.
Now, I don’t know about you, but I really feel that it’s good to have some physical stores around in case of an emergency (like my case). Sure, they might be more expensive, but I guess that’s the price we have to pay for getting something within such a short notice.
Now, just so you know, the mall is allegedly hoping for an en bloc – given its customer base now, it might just be a good idea, you know.
