Good news for all the singles out there — as former PM Lee Hsien Loong promised, you’ll now be able to apply for two-room flexi flats in all locations across Singapore.
Here’s what you need to know about it.
Singles Can Now Buy BTO Flats From All Locations in Singapore
If you’ve been a single adult for some time, you would be familiar with the struggles of buying a flat in Singapore. In the past, there were all sorts of purchase restrictions for singles buying flats in Singapore.
For one, previously, eligible single first-timers could apply for new two-room flexi flats only in 12 non-mature estates. If you wanted to get a new unit in a mature estate such as Bedok or Kallang, people would tell you to “dream on”.
However, thanks to the new HDB classification announced by PM Lee in last year’s National Day Rally (NDR), all that is about to change. Your dream can now actually be a reality sia.
Starting from the upcoming BTO sales exercise this month, singles will be able to apply for two two-room flexi flats in all locations — it doesn’t matter whether it’s a non-mature or mature estate.
Out of the 15 BTO projects that will be launched this month, more than 1,900 such flats in 10 of these projects will be up for grabs for eligible singles.
But here’s the million-dollar question — where exactly will these projects be launched?
Well, there’s Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Bukit Batok, Jurong West, Kallang/Whampoa, Pasir Ris, and Sengkang.
Can take your pick lah.
How to Know if You’re Eligible
However, before you celebrate, you should make sure that you’re eligible for these BTOs in the first place.
So, what are the requirements for eligibility? According to the Housing & Development Board (HDB), the basic requirements are that you have to be a Singapore Citizen above 35 years old and earning less than $7,000 per month.
And, of course, it must also be your first time applying for a BTO.
There are also several other requirements, which you can find here.
HDB to Continue Setting Aside Up To 65% of Two-Room Flexi Flats for Eligible First-Timer Singles
Even if you miss this month’s BTO launches, fret not. There are many more to come in the future, where HDB will continue setting aside flats for eligible first-timer singles.
In fact, HDB has shared that it will continue setting aside up to 65% of two-room flexi flats, that are not meant for seniors, for eligible first-timer singles.
The 65% of flats set aside are not just within the Prime category, Plus category, or Standard category alone — it’s 65% of two-room flexi flats across all three categories of flats.
Priority Access to BTOs to be Extended to Singles By Mid-2025
There have definitely been greater strides taken in recent years to make housing more accessible for singles in Singapore. In PM Lawrence Wong’s maiden speech at this year’s NDR, he announced that priority access to BTO flats will be extended to singles in the future.
Specifically, priority access will be extended to singles who are buying a flat with or near their parents. This change is expected to take effect in mid-2025, with more details to be provided by the Ministry of National Development (MND) in due course.
There’s lots to look forward to if you’re single in Singapore lah.
