S’porean Relates Her Experience on How She’s Treated as a COVID-19 Suspect Case

Lest you’re unaware, there are more and more confirmed cases of the COVID-19 in Singapore.

In fact, as of 15 February, Singapore has reported five new cases of the COVID-19 infection, most of which have been linked to the cluster at Grace Assembly of God church and the cluster at Seletar Aerospace construction site.

The situation seems to be here to stay for a while too as Singapore’s Health Minister Gan Kim Yong earlier warned Singaporeans to expect the number of COVID-19 cases to increase.

If you’re the average Singaporean, you would’ve only heard of these happenings on the news.

But at least one Singaporean woman has taken to social media to share what goes down behind the scenes in terms of the measures the government is taking to identify potential novel coronavirus patients:

A woman by the name of Joyce Chan took to Facebook to share her experience of being a suspect COVID-19 case.

She shares about her journey to the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) in order to encourage those who are sick to step forward to seek treatment.

“I’ve heard that people are now less willing to seek treatment when they are unwell as they fear being sent to NCID.”

She shares how she had visited the doctor for a cough. However, she was unexpectedly sent straight to NCID from the clinic via ambulance.

Yes she wasn’t allowed to go by herself.

But don’t worry, she doesn’t have the virus and she was promptly discharged with medication.

She explained that she was sent to NCID because of her recent travel history and cough.

NCID Experience (Comes With Free Porridge)

Once she was at NCID, she had a few good words to say about the staff and the system.

In short, she said that they were “super organised and systematic”. She also praised the healthcare workers for their effort and dedication during this outbreak.

The staff even asked if she had taken her breakfast and when she said that she had not, they offered her porridge.

No curry puff or any unhealthy food, though. It’s a hospital after all.

For most of us, going to a place where they test COVID-19 potential patients might be a scary thought.

You might worry about being infected with the virus even when you actually aren’t sick. Well, Joyce assures that this will not happen given the measures that NCID takes.

She said that there are protocols at NCID that make you feel “super safe”, such as by standing a good distance apart while waiting to be tested.

They’re also equipped with Full PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for the safety of the patients and the staff. Masks are also provided for patients.

She also stresses that the patients are always placed a good distance apart again and says that there is absolutely no way that she might have physical contact with another patient.

Looks like an exam hall, isn’t it?

Disinfectant is also used.

She ends off her post by concluding that she had “mad respect” to the medical professionals at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Raffles Medical Group.

She also reminds Singaporeans who are down with the Kiasu virus not to panic. Instead, she says “this is the time to show gratitude, appreciation and support”.

We’re certainly heartened to hear about her positive experience at NCID and urge members of the public who display coronavirus symptoms to get yourself treated. After all, there are now subsidies in 900 clinics whereby you’d only need to pay a $10 flat fee for a peace of mind.

And if you’re sent to NCID, maybe you’ll walk home with a bowl of porridge too.
