Gotham has Catwoman.
Agrabah has Aladdin.
We have the Standard Chartered Robber (though I must say the first two are more heroic in so many ways).
If you’ve no clue on what I am talking about, this is the guy in question:
Well, this story has been ongoing for about two years, and my colleague has penned down the entire shebang in a bite-sized format.
Now, there are new revelations
So after serving his 14-month jail sentence in Thailand, David James Roach was deported to the UK.
Following a request from Singapore, he was detained in London.
In a joint statement by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), they said: “We sought the assistance of the UK authorities to arrest Roach, with a view to his eventual extradition to Singapore. We are working with the UK authorities to commence the extradition proceedings.”
Singapore has an extradition treaty with Britain…
But there is a catch.
The MHA said in a press release: “As part of the extradition proceedings, the UK government has requested an assurance that if Roach were to be found guilty by a Singapore Court of robbery, the sentence of corporal punishment will not be carried out.”
Yes, they don’t want Roach to be caned if he is found guilty.
“The Singapore Government has agreed to the UK authorities’ request,” said MHA.
This “does not affect the general position taken by Singapore on corporal punishment”, the assurance is to ensure Roach does not escape justice.
If he is found guilty
He is being extradited on one count of robbery and one count of money laundering, and both offences carry a maximum jail term of 10 years,
But luckily, he would be escaping the caning—not less than six strokes.
Thoughts
I am pretty sure this won’t be the last time we hear about Roach, so let’s just wait and see how this unfolds.
