Sick of running alone? Fret not; after your solo run for almost two years, you can finally pant your way to the finish line with hundreds of people.
One of the most popular marathons in Singapore will be back physically after experimenting with virtual race and augment reality last year.
The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) is back with two new event choices that make you feel more human again:
- Virtual Race (VR) Grand Finale
- In-person Grand Finale
Virtual Race (VR) Grand Finale
If you prefer to run at your own time and favourite location but you do not want to gather with strangers at The Float @ Marina Bay, you can participate in their VR Grand Finale.
Held from 1 Dec to 12 Dec, participants can choose from five different race categories:
- 5km
- 10km
- Half Marathon
- Kids VR 1.5km
- Kids VR 3km
There will also be a VR Marathon this month (Nov) where registered participants will be challenged to complete the full marathon (42.195km) in as many sessions as they prefer before the end of the month (30 Nov).
If you do complete the races, you will earn a digital badge or have the option to purchase a limited edition SCSM VR Marathon 2021 medal.
There will be a suggested run route but as it is a virtual event, participants are free to run their own route.
In-person Grand Finale
The in-person grand finale will take place at The Float @ Marina Bay from 4 Dec to 5 Dec.
All participants must be fully vaccinated or own a valid negative pre-event test result to participate in the in-person events.
The events will be spread out over four sessions of 1,000 people each. In total, there will be a maximum of 4,000 in-person participants.
All the in-person participants will receive a medal and a t-shirt.
Toyota Ekiden and 5km Event
On 4 Dec, there will be two events: the Toyota Ekiden (team of four) and the 5km grand finale. The events will be held across two sessions.
The first session is the Toyota Ekiden (team of four) that is held from 6am to 11.30am and the second session is the 5km grand finale from 4pm to 9.30pm.
Grand Finale 10KM
On 5 Dec, the 10km event will be held across two sessions:
- 6am to 11.30am
- 4pm to 9.30pm
The participants in each session will be further split into different groups. They will be flagged off in waves of 50 runners, with three runners moving off every 10 seconds.
The runners can only remove their masks when they cross the starting line. Masks will be provided at the finish line and participants are required to put their mask back on after they’ve completed their run.
This may be reduced further or with more added rules, in line with the prevailing COVID-19 safe management measures and guidelines.
There will be no road closures this year.
Live Broadcast
Alongside the event, there will be a live broadcast on 4 Dec on Mediacorp Channel 5. This broadcast will touch the memories and hearts of those who have been part of this journey.
In case you’re thinking: got so many people meh?Â
Well, the SCSM typically attracts close to 50,000 runners annually. This does not include the 70,000 spectators lining up on the streets, cheering these runners on.
