A few days ago, it was reported that Preetipls’ brother would be charged for a rap video they made in 2019.
Subhas Nair and Preetipls were both given a 24-month conditional warning for the video, during which they had to remain crime-free.
Subhas was accused of breaching the conditional warning on three occasions since then, however, which is why he was charged in court today (1 Nov).
It wasn’t the charges that everyone was focusing on, though, but what he was wearing.
Preetipls’ Brother Went to Court With T-Shirt of Man Who is on a Death Row in S’pore
Subhas turned up to court today wearing a black T-shirt with the photo of Nagaenthran Dharmalingam on it.
Dharmalingam is a 31-year-old Malaysian man who has been on death row ever since he was convicted and sentenced to death in November 2010 for importing 42.72g of heroin a year before.
In May 2019, the Court of Appeal dismissed two appeals against his sentence.
Subhas presumably wore the T-shirt in support of Dharmalingam.
Charged With Attempting to Promote Ill Will Over Religion & Race
Accompanied by his sister Preetipls, Subhas was charged in court today with four counts of attempting to promote feelings of ill will among different groups on grounds of religion and race.
He’s accused of breaching his conditional warning on four occasions between July 2019 and March 2021.
The first incident occurred on 25 July last year, when he commented on a video of Chinese Christians who had made hateful comments against another community. “If two Malay Muslims made a video promoting Islam and saying the kind of hateful things these Chinese Christians said, ISD would have been at the door before they even hit ‘upload’,” he allegedly wrote.
Then, when he commented on a 15 Oct post last year about the murder of an Indian man in the 2019 Orchard Towers incident, Subhas allegedly claimed that one of the Chinese men involved received lenient treatment from the authorities because of his race.
“Calling out racism and Chinese privilege = two year conditional warning and smear campaign in the media. Actually conspiring to murder an Indian man = Half the sentence and ‘You’re having a baby soon right? Boy or girl?’ Do you actually think a brown person would get asked these type of questions? This place is just not for us,” he allegedly wrote.
While under investigation, the 28-year-old depicted a cartoon drawing during an indoor performance that allegedly contained the same text he wrote on Instagram over the Orchard Towers murder. The incident occurred on 11 March this year.
Since Subhas is deemed to have breached his conditional warning, he will also be charged for the rap video he made back in 2019, as those who breach their conditional warning will be charged for both their original and new offences.
He hasn’t plead guilty, and is offered bail of S$10,000. His next court mention will be on 29 Nov.
If found guilty of his charges, Subhas could face up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
