You’ve probably heard about national swimmers Joseph Schooling and Amanda Lim admitting to taking drugs overseas.
You can watch these two videos to know more about the incident, and how Joseph Schooling was “caught”:
An internal review of our national swimmers has revealed that Teong Tzen Wei, the Commonwealth Games silver medalist, has also admitted to taking drugs.
This makes him the third national swimmer to have done so.
Tested Negative But Admitted Drug Use
Sport Singapore (SportSG) stated on 28 September that they have wrapped up their internal review, which found a third swimmer admitting to drug use.
When investigated by the Central Narcotics Bureau, all three swimmers’ urine tested negative for drugs. Despite this, they’ve admitted to consuming drugs overseas while representing Singapore as athletes.
Lim was also issued a stern warning by the CNB for possessing a drug utensil, which is an offence in Singapore.
Warning Letters, Suspending Support
The sport governing body has issued letters of warning against any future misconduct to the three swimmers. They will also be suspending support under the High Performance Scheme for a month, starting on 1 October.
This means that the three athletes will not receive any training assistance grants, as well as access to sports science and sports medicine facilities and services.
Teong, who is under the Sports Excellence Scholarship programme, will have his scholarship benefits revoked for a month too. This scholarship provides financial support for athletes, and gives them more opportunities to train and compete at major games.

Cooperated Fully in Investigations
SportSG said that they took into account multiple factors when deciding the “punishment”.
They noted that all three athletes readily admitted their mistakes, and cooperated fully throughout the investigations. The three have also expressed regret for their “lapses in judgement”.
They are also going to make amends by contributing back to the sporting community and in education efforts to prevent others from making the same mistake.
“SportSG will continue to support all three athletes after the period of suspension, in both their sporting endeavours as well as their continued rehabilitation from this episode.”
