Tharman Also Thanked Ivan Lim During His Victory Speech for Jurong GRC

If you were following the GE2020 results as avidly as we did and watched through the entire 7-hour-long CNA broadcast, you might have found yourself pausing for a bit when the Jurong GRC team came on TV to thank voters.

Politickia96: Wait, isn’t Jurong GRC supposed to be 5 people? Did one of the volunteers photo-bomb the thank-you speech?

Then you take a closer look:

Politickia96: He looks familiar.

If you’re wondering why he looks familiar, it’s because he has hogged the internet headlines for quite a few days earlier during the campaigning.

The previous (and probably, future) aspiring political candidate might have withdrawn from the election but Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, the anchor minister of Jurong GRC, still brought him up on screen to thank him for his efforts.

Thanking Lim

Mr Tharman thanked voters of Jurong GRC for trusting in the PAP team.

He said that they will work harder, “particularly during these difficult times”, and will help each and every family “with its needs”.

He added that they want to build Jurong “as a strong community, a better community for all of us”.

PAP’s strength comes from teamwork, he said, including the two new candidates, Shawn Huang and Xie Yao Quan, as well as Ivan Lim who had worked hard “during the initial stages”.

PAP’s activists and volunteers who “have been wonderful all these years” are also included in his thank-you speech.

Jurong GRC, the constituency we thought would either have 99% or 99.9% of votes going to the PAP, won with just 74.62% of the votes.

In the previous election, it got nearly 80%.

The leader of Jurong GRC is so popular that its opponent even posted this image before polling day:

Three guesses as to why they did this and the first two don’t count.

Mr Tharman said that the opposition team fielded by RDU “fought a good fight” and did “creditably”.

He thanked them for the contest.

Here’s the final Jurong GRC result in full:

Results:
