There’s A Cheese Bak Kut Teh in KL?! Time To Travel Liao

Bak Kut Teh is the stuff of dreams as far as a Singaporean foodie is concerned.

Its herbal (usually for Malaysia) or peppery (usually for Singapore) broth, the soggy tau pok, flaky flesh that’s been cooked to the point of pillowy worthy texture that it slides down your throat like a cloud, and yes, it’s the one thing that takes you to Balestier for your BKT fix in the middle of the night.

But there’s now a new place in KL that’s serving Bak Kut Teh with a twist.

Got cheese on top of it lah.

I’m confused myself; how can it even get along? It’s almost like a Tom and Jerry cartoon – they will fight but it’s so funny to see them together, and at the end of the day, it’s all good.

Here’s what we found out. Read on, and maybe after that, start planning your trip liao.

Where It’s At – Setapak

First of all, don’t expect a restaurant or anything to eat the cheesy BKT. You’ll find yourself at the entrance of a tiny stall in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur that’s just on the first floor of any regular wet market.

The shop’s called BAJ Restaurant, and have been serving this extra special bowl of Bak Kut Teh since early 2017.

Here’s the kicker – the cheese BKT is actually a fan favourite.

While you might be put off at the thought of mixing an old-school dish with cheese, you’d be happy to know that it goes with the dry version of BKT, not the soup one. Whew – had me scared for a second.

Haven’t had any dry BKT before? Then come on down to our office at Bukit Batok Crescent. It tastes just as addictive as the wet – I mean, the soup version.

If you can picture the gooey cheese sticking onto a pork rib that’s got a spicy/herbal sauce kick to it, you’ll understand that it’s the stuff that’ll have you daydreaming for days.

Serious.

You can even make your pork piece extra cheesy by enveloping it in cheese, pretty much like how you’d do it in a Korean restaurant with spicy fried chicken.

Yummy, for sure!

The price tag on the cheese Bak Kut Teh is also damn cheap – only slightly more than SGD$4 for one serving of it! Remember, this is in KL (a city), so that kind of price is considered very reasonable.

And if you want to sample dishes other than the cheese BKT, the stall’s got you covered.

They are also able to whip up a selection of Western or Chinese dishes that are quite affordable too. You’d be able to pick items like salted egg chicken chop with spaghetti, steamed fish and cheese chicken chop from their menu.

Sure, it looks delicious, you might say, but at the same time you’re thinking if it’s as good as people say it is.

Well, there’s only one way to find out, and that’s to head over to KL and then Setapak and then give it a go. You’ll have to be at the doorstep of Pasar Jalan Genting Klang, and walk into the wet market before you find the steps leading you to the heavenly doors of cheese Bak Kut Teh.

No car? No problem; there are millions of buses going to KL from Singapore. The question is this:

Dare to try or not?
