Viral challenges are all the rage this past couple of years, ranging from the more recent “The Floor is Lava” challenge to “Charlie Charlie” and of course, the Ice Bucket Challenge.
But there’s been one fresh one ah, that is so stupid you know. Wait, I tell you why.
The brand new YouTube challenge wants you to pour HOT WATER on yourself. Some kids are actually getting scalded pretty badly from doing it.
What is the Hot Water Challenge?
If you take up the challenge, you either have to pour boiling hot water on yourself or sip it on a straw. Reports from Global News have seen a spike in the number of children being rushed into Emergency thanks to this boiling challenge.
It’s Not Really a New Challenge, Either
The hot water challenge actually started back in 2014, pretty much immediately after the ALS-awareness challenge that uses a bucketful of ice water.
It has been lying low until this year when an 8-year old kid from America died from the challenge. She drank boiling hot water with a straw after she was dared to by her cousin.
The idea came from a YouTube video the kids had watched, said the late girl’s mum.
Another incident in New York saw an 11-year old kid being splashed with boiling water while she was sleeping. This happened while she was at a sleepover in her friend’s home. The prank caused the poor girl severe burn wounds on her neck and her face.
The mother of the 11-year old, Jamoneisha Merritt posted a public warning about the challenge on Facebook last week.
She’s called out to parents to keep an eye and take control of their kids, and to ensure that they do not imitate dangerous things they see on social media platforms.
It might seem like a fun thing to do, but it is really not.
Facts about Boiling Water
Care to know how ridiculously dangerous boiling water can be? It takes literally seconds to cause you third-degree burns. Hot liquids, in fact, burn your skin cells as quickly as fire.
Scalds are also known to be the main cause of burn injuries for kids below the age of 4 years.
Just One More of Many Dangerous Social Trends
Trending and viral are two things that are starting to get pretty crazy these days. The Blue Whale Challenge, for instance, calls out teenagers and preteens to harm themselves physically. Two teenagers have apparently committed suicide thanks to this challenge.
The Blue Whale Challenge stretches over a period of 50 days. Every day, the darer has something to complete. It ends with a suicide attempt.
Some of the tasks include cutting your arm with a razor along your veins la, waking up at 4 in the morning and going up the roof la, or poking your hand with a needle for as many times as you can.
Seriously, why so dumb one. Why can’t it be a positive challenge instead? So sad. Be safe, people.
