The Avengers may enjoy widespread fame for their on-screen superhero antics…
But over in reality, actual defence forces undeniably reign supreme.
Though cape-less and arguably powerless in a sense, these forces have saved numerous lives.
And it appears that one of the forces, our local SCDF, has been at it again.
SCDF Officers Spent an Hour to Rescue Trapped Driver in Lorry by Cutting Through the Vehicle
Just yesterday (21 May 2021), the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) released an update on its Facebook page.
According to the post, which has since been shared more than 50 times, an accident had occurred after the junction of Toh Guan Road and Toh Guan Road East.
A lorry and a van had collided, causing the lorry’s cabin to be pushed inwards.
“Emergency responders from Jurong and Clementi Fire Stations were dispatched to the scene,” SCDF wrote.
Though the driver of the van managed to self-evacuate, things weren’t quite so pretty for the other driver.
Apparently, the driver of the lorry was left in an entrapped state, and was pinned in the seat with his legs “severely trapped at the floor area near the accelerator and brake pedals”.
Considering how fiendishly it sounds like a scene out of a Final Destination movie, the situation surely called for a level of preciseness…
And it was reflected in the SCDF’s decision.
“Due to the intricacy of the rescue operation,” they wrote. “Rescuers from SCDF’s elite Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) were also dispatched to the scene.”
Rescuers then proceeded to manoeuvre in a delicate fashion, utilising hydraulic equipment to cut through the crushed cabin.
Throughout the process, “a paramedic was also actively monitoring the driver’s vital signs”.
Thankfully, the near one-hour operation was a success, and the entrapped driver was retrieved.
He was “conscious throughout the operation and was conveyed to National University Hospital”.
The incident has since drawn the praise of Netizens, with one also wishing the victim a speedy recovery.

Grievous Incidents
Unfortunately, such instances aren’t exactly few and far between.
In fact, just earlier this month, another separate van and lorry collision had occurred.
According to a news report, a police van and a lorry were reportedly involved in an accident on Friday (7 May 2021).
It’s said to have occurred at the junction of Jalan Buroh and Jurong Port Road, with a distress call sent out at 9:02 p.m.
A grand total of 17 men, including a lorry driver and five men in blue, suffered injuries from the accident.
They were all conveyed to the National University Hospital.
In a video that was circulating on social media, the left side of the police van could be found in a dented state.
The lorry’s windscreen was also viciously shattered, with shards strewn across the road.
