Yesterday, a clip of someone playing Grand Theft Auto (GTA) made the rounds on social media.
Have a look:
Eagle-eyed netizens noticed that the streets in the game looked oddly familiar, and that the officers involved resembled the Traffic Police (TP) officers we’re used to seeing on the roads of Singapore.
Yup, this Lancer really did reverse into a TP officer and knock him down in his attempt to evade capture.
Unfortunately for him, he failed this particular mission.
Videos Show GTA Driver Struggling With Officers During Arrest
Around the same time that the GTA-style video was shared online, another video showing a man struggling with police officers emerged.
The 12-second video shows the man surrounded by at least four officers who are trying to put him into a police vehicle.
With bulging eyes that would scare Dwayne Johnson, the man can be seen screaming in anger at an officer in front of him, stubbornly refusing to get into the car.
Two officers eventually manage to get him into the car, but only through the use of force.
Another video shows police officers leading a dog in and around the Lancer to conduct a check, presumably because they suspect drugs were involved.
Meanwhile, the suspect can do nothing but look on and await his fate.
Man Arrested After Manhunt Operation
According to the police, TP officers were patrolling an area near Upper Paya Lebar Road at about 9:50am yesterday (28 Oct) when they signalled for the Lancer driver to stop his vehicle for a check.
Instead of following orders, the driver sped off, and the officers gave chase.
Their pursuit ended in Geylang East Avenue 1, where the driver knocked down the TP officer in his attempt to flee the scene.
This prompted the authority to launch a manhunt operation, and they eventually located the assailant, identified as a 37-year-old man, and detained him.
However, it was his 34-year-old passenger who they arrested for using criminal force against a public servant and suspected drug-related offences, meaning the passenger may have been the incensed man we saw struggling with officers in the video.
TP Officer Did Not Suffer Serious Injuries
The good news is that the TP officer who was knocked down did not suffer serious injuries.
Member of Parliament Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim identified the officer as Senior Staff Sergeant (SSSgt) Haidil Bin Osman, and wished him a speedy recovery.
“This is not the first time our dedicated Traffic Police officers are injured during the course of their work,” Dr Faisal said.
“They take the risk of their work in their stride, and continue to patrol our roads to keep our roads safe. Their professionalism and dedication to work is truly admirable. I am appreciative of what they do, and proud of their hard work in keeping Singapore’s roads safe.
“Let’s continue to do our part to make our roads safer for everyone,” he added.
