Since 13 Oct, unvaccinated folks have not been allowed to dine at hawker centres and coffee shops or enter shopping malls.
While enforcement action will be taken immediately at these eateries, there will be a grace period of one week for entering malls, meaning the stricter rules will really only kick in on 20 Oct.
Naturally, with many schools located in malls, it’s imperative that unvaccinated caregivers have access to such facilities in malls.
But unfortunately for them, this may not always be the case.
Unvaccinated Caregivers of Kids Attending Tuition & Enrichment Classes Cannot Enter Malls
Unvaccinated caregivers of kids attending tuition and enrichment class will not be able to enter malls when the vaccination-differentiated rules come into effect.
Many of us assumed that this wouldn’t be the case as unvaccinated caregivers are able to enter malls to visit preschools and daycare centres if they have kids there.
But there’s a key difference between the two, as Enterprise Singapore (ESG) explained: “Childcare centres or pre-schools are key services typically required by parents who need to return to work.”
Well, tuition and enrichment classes aren’t key services.
So, if unvaccinated caregivers need to pick up or drop their child off at a tuition or enrichment centre, they have to do one of the following:
- get a valid negative pre-event test (PET) result to enter the mall
- arrange for someone else – a vaccinated person – to drop off or pick up their child
Some malls are denying entry to unvaccinated individuals, while others have allowed them in due to the one week’s grace.
However, come 20 Oct, all malls will deny entry to unvaccinated individuals.
The Exceptions
There are, of course, several exceptions.
The authorities previously clarified that the following groups of unvaccinated people will be allowed to enter malls after the stricter rules kick in:
- patients who require medical attention from facilities located in malls
- unvaccinated caregivers who need to drop off or pick up their children from preschools and childcare centres located in malls
- children aged 12 and under
- unvaccinated individuals who have recovered from COVID-19
They will need to show proof, though.
For example, unvaccinated patients who require medical services in malls will need to show proof of an appointment such as a letter, email, SMS, or appointment card.
Unvaccinated caregivers dropping off or picking up their child from a daycare centre or preschool will need to present a letter of support from the preschool or childcare centre before entering.
Do note that all unvaccinated individuals who have a negative pre-event test result will be allowed to enter malls, but only for the duration of the activity or service they require.
As for vaccinated individuals, they are still allowed to enter malls, as well as dine in at restaurants, coffee shops, and hawker centres, but in groups of up to two.
