A new boss is out in the streets, replacing Delta to be the next big thing.

While Omicron cases only make up 18% of Singapore’s COVID-19 cases, the US experienced the other extreme, with over 95% of actively circulating COVID-19 strains being from Omicron.

CDC Estimates 95.4% of US’ COVID-19 Cases to be from Omicron Variant

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gave their New Year’s prediction: an estimated 95.4% of COVID-19 strains circulating were of the Omicron variant since Tuesday (4 January).

This came after news that Omicron was responsible for around 77% of cases during Christmas week, which was a significant increase from the projected 58.6%.

On the other hand, the Delta variant only accounts for 4.6% of all US COVID-19 cases as of 1 January.

The Omicron variant has taken the US by storm since its initial detection on 1 December, sparking a new wave of infections. By taking over Delta to be the biggest variant, daily cases were inching close to the 1 million mark on 3 January.

What is the Omicron variant?

The Omicron variant is showing itself to be the next major variant after Delta. It has proven to be more easily transmissible even though it causes less severe symptoms.

First detected in Hong Kong and southern Africa, this variant has since bulldozed its way through the world at maximum speed.

Despite the international community taking precautionary measures to keep Omicron out of their countries, it has already spread to many regions and is continuing its journey. It is slowly but surely making its presence known in Singapore as well, with increasing rates of local Omicron cases daily.

Singapore’s Response to Omicron: Vaccinations and Boosters

The nationwide vaccination exercise is still going strong, and new supplies of COVID-19 vaccines are expected to arrive this month.

Vaccinations are also offered to children aged five to 11, and booster shots are also being offered to those who have completed their vaccinations at least five months ago.

Just like those value shops that have ‘LAST DAY ONLY’ hanging throughout the year, the end of each variant’s wave marks the start of another, and they never truly go away.

Let’s all do what we can to combat the virus, and hopefully we’ll see each other’s bare faces again by this time next year.
