Jack Ma, the second richest man in China with a net worth of $28.3 billion according to Forbes is no stranger to us.
This CEO of Chinese e-commerce powerhouse Alibaba, has done the impossible – dancing to Michael Jackson’s classics in front of thousands of employees at his company’s 18th annual celebration and recently sung at a music festival in China.
As if dancing and singing weren’t enough, he’s surprising us this time round by starring in a short film called Gong Shou Dao, which translates to “The Art of Attack and Defence”.
In the film, Ma will practice Tai Chi, a traditional Chinese martial art that involves deep breathing and slow, fluid movements. He has been studying the art since 1988. Yes, for real, in real life.
And he’s not alone. Hmm, obviously, since it’s a movie after all.
You can look forward to other martial artists like Jet Li (who will be producing the movie), Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa.
According to a blog post by Alibaba, none of the actors in Gong Shou Dao took a paycheck for their roles in the movie. Well, I can see why… since he so rich already.
But really, his motivation for this movie is actually to “promote (Tai Chi) as well as the positive philosophy it embodies”, according to an Alibaba spokeswoman.
“He believes the spiritual and physical benefits of Tai Chi should be shared across the world and used to promote exercise and wellness and cultural exchanges among people of different cultures.”
Gong Shou Dao is scheduled to launch on 11 November, also known as Singles’ Day in China, and will be available on Chinese video platform, Youku.
Don’t worry, I’m sure we Jack Ma fans can grab a copy since it will be circulated online, for sure.
Anyone looking forward to 11.11 now?
I know I am, not just because of “Gongshoudao” but because 11.11 means there will be a massive sale online everywhere! Think of it as Black Friday in the Chinese-speaking regions.
And is this a marketing gimmick to promote 11.11 sale? The film is produced by Jet Li, and according to him, the movie will be “promoted during Alibaba’s 11.11 Global Shopping Festival because that’s a strong window to drum up awareness of the movie and Tai Chi, itself.”
In other words, the 11.11 sale promote the movie, not the other way around.
Okay. Jinjja?
