Brace yourselves, ladies, and gentlemen. The strong winds stirring in Singapore will be staying for awhile. Well, at least we’ve got company.
Weather Forecast
Your trusty umbrella will be handy this coming week as the weather forecast grumbles about its gloomy days ahead. The daily temperature during this period is expected to range between 22 and 29 deg C. Occasionally windy with passing showers, we are pretty sure that indoor activities would be preferred.
What is it that is causing these incoming wind and rain? I was hoping you’d ask. Singapore is affected by a weather phenomenon known as the monsoon surge. This simply means more wind and rain for us.
Also, the National Environment Agency (NEA) has informed that the surge will bring windy conditions with widespread rain, heavy at times, on some days in the coming week. Yeap, they are advising us not to throw caution to the wind. Bring an umbrella with you!
The Monsoon Surge
A monsoon surge refers to the strengthening of winds over the South China Sea, which is to the north-east of Singapore. How does it work? The winds blowing towards Singapore pick up moisture as they travel across the sea, resulting in the formation of rain clouds over the region.
Assistant Professor Chow from the National University of Singapore’s geography department stated that rain-bringing monsoon surges are not typical for this period. Indeed, February usually coincides with the dry phase of the north-east monsoon season, making it the driest month of the year. Yet, we are facing strong winds all over Singapore.
While NEA stated that February is the driest month of the year climatologically, it is still too early to determine if the expected deluge over the week would make this February the wettest one yet.
I guess I’ll just try to stay grounded while the wind intends to sweep me off my feet this Valentines’ Day.
