You know what they say: good food must eat.
But what about good food with undeclared allergens?
Then, that one cannot eat.
In recent news, a certain food item was recalled due to not declaring an allergen in its ingredients.
SFA Recalls Wilton Rainbow Chip Crunch Sprinkles for Not Declaring Milk as Potential Allergen
According to the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a food recall alert for Wilton Rainbow Chip Crunch Sprinkles.
This is due to the presence of an undeclared allergen in the sprinkles. An allergen you would not expect to be in sprinkles: milk.
Wait, sprinkles have milk in it?
Well, apparently they do— and Phoon Huat sells them too.
Phoon Huat Recalls Wilton Rainbow Chip Crunch Sprinkles
SFA has directed Phoon Huat to recall the product as of Tuesday (9 Mar). The recall is ongoing.
The product is not a food safety issue for those who are not allergic to milk.
That means if you are lactose intolerant, you should steer clear of this product as well.
“Allergen in food could result in an allergic reaction in individuals who are sensitive to it,” SFA said, advising those allergic to milk to steer clear of these sprinkles.
“Under the Sale of Food (Food Regulation), food products containing ingredients that are known to cause hypersensitivity must be declared on food packaging labels to safeguard public health,” the agency added.
Other Recalled Food Products
Aside from Wilton Rainbow Chip Crunch Sprinkles, there have been many other food products with dangerous ingredients that were recalled as well.
The Picard Rolled Yule Log Chocolate Tonka Bean Cake which was imported from France by Redmart was recalled for containing tonka beans. Tonka beans contain high levels of the coumarin chemical, which can cause liver damage.
Excessive levels of a food-borne bacterium were found in the Crab Brand’s Black Pepper Seed. The food-borne bacterium, bacillus cereus, can be found in soil, vegetation and the intestinal tracts of insects and animals.
According to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA), consuming food containing bacillus cereus will cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.
More recently, Singlong Foodstuff Trading’s Ground Peanut Powder with Sugar was recalled due to high levels of aflatoxins. Aflatoxins can damage the genetic information within a cell, causing mutations or even cancer.
Previously, Singlong Puff was recalled for a small metal fragment was found inside a peanut puff. In 2018, a metal screw was found in a bottle of Singlong’s crunchy peanut butter.
Maybe we should be extra cautious when buying Singlong’s peanut products.
On the other hand, there may be hope for those with food allergies! The National University Hospital (NUH) conducted an egg allergy trial treatment to treat those with food allergies, so you may be able to enjoy what may have killed you last time.
Finally, a way to eat everything you want without worrying about blowing up like a pufferfish.
