Insects are an exotic snack for some cultures. It’s rare to find them in Singapore but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have them.
In fact, one TikTok user got her share of exotic insects, unwillingly though, when she tried making a meal for her boyfriend.
Woman Claims to Find ‘Many Insects’ Crawling in Pasta Bought from NTUC FairPrice
In a video uploaded on Monday (7 September), TikTok user @_xgrace or Grace, wanted to cook a meal for her boyfriend.
@_xgracel This was an unopened packet with no visible tears. Can’t believe this is the 2nd time this happened to us 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ @fairpricesg #sanremopasta #fairprice #sanremo
She opened her last packet of San Remo Penne Pasta, bought from FairPrice, and boiled it.
To her horror, tiny insects that looked like beetles, aka Weevils, started to appear from it.
She went back to take a look at the packaging and found more of the creatures crawling around inside.
Yikes.
The packet was brand new and had not been opened until that day.
According to her caption, this wasn’t the first time it has happened to her. So she’s now asking her viewers if this was common.
And apparently, it is.
One netizen explained that all wheat-based products, like rice, flour, pasta, and cereals, have weevil eggs and the trick was to eat them before the eggs hatch.
Wait. What?
Another mentioned that Sen Remo Pastas are notorious for having more weevils compared to other products.
To date, the video has garnered over 139,700 views and 2564 likes.
Responding to Goody Feed’s queries, a spokesperson from FairPrice said that, “shoppers are allowed to return or exchange products that are of an unsatisfactory quality at the same store of purchase, with receipt. Should shoppers find any anomalies in the products they have bought from us, they can approach us directly to help address their concerns.”
How to Avoid Weevils
Despite knowing about these tiny creatures, I’m pretty sure most of us, if not all, will still be consuming rice and pasta.
So here are some ways to prevent these insects from appearing:
- Buy your products in smaller quantities
- If you use a container for rice, always wash and clean it before pouring in new rice
- Store your products in a tightly sealed container and in a cool and dry place
- Only open one product at a time and avoid multiple open packets
Maybe that’s why we wash our rice before consuming them.
