I’ve some “good” and bad news.

The bad news? There’s yet another case of sexual misconduct in Singapore.

The “good” news?

It didn’t occur in NUS!

(Somewhere in Singapore, you can almost hear a sigh of relief transmitting through.)

Youth Pleads Guilty to Taking 4 Voyeuristic Videos in Female Toilets at MRT Station, Church Camp & in School

According to The Straits Timesa 20-year-old pleaded guilty to four charges of insult of modesty and one charge of criminal trespass yesterday (12 Apr).

Six charges of a similar nature were also taken into consideration.

Apparently, he had taken illicit videos of four females at a church camp, an MRT station, a school toilet, and a school canteen when he was 16.

He was previously also confronted with five charges of molestation, but has since compounded the offences.

According to the news report, he was studying at a local school four years ago when he embarked on a three-month voyeuristic spree.

On 4 May 2017, he took an upskirt video of his first victim, while they were on an escalator at an MRT station.

On 15 June 2017, he situated his phone over a toilet cubicle and recorded his second victim showering.

On 22 June 2017, he squatted outside a disabled-friendly toilet while at a school camp, and took a video of his third victim showering.

On 13 July 2017, he was seated across his fourth victim at a school canteen when he shifted his phone under the table and took a video.

Apparently, he had a tendency to rewatch the videos on a repeated basis.

His voyeuristic videoing spree came to a grinding halt on 31 July, however, when his school’s vice-principal called the cops on him.

He was swiftly apprehended.

Sentencing

In possible consideration of his age and criminal record at the time of the offences, the court deliberated the suitability of probation and reformative training.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Daniel Ling, however, pointed out that though there was no prior record, there was a relatively large number of victims.

He will be back in court on 20 April.

For each count of insulting the modesty of a female, he could face an imprisonment term of up to a year, a fine, or both.

Other Instances

If you scroll through the Goody Feed app everyday, you’d know that, sadly, cases of voyeurism are becoming prevalent.

The youth above was pretty foolish with his actions, but not as foolish as this 34-year-old man.

In May 2020, a 34-year-old man was arrested for insulting a traffic police officer after she reminded him to pay his traffic fines.

Apart from making insulting comments, he also sent the woman upskirt images of an unknown person.

The man was reported and the police arrested him on 3 June 2020.

In addition, the mention of voyeurism would surely bring to mind the recent spate of cases that occurred in National University of Singapore (NUS).

The cases only really gained prominence, however, after the infamous Monica Baey incident gained traction on the net.

Since then, the university has seen two professors dismissed over instances of sexual misconduct.

Numerous other perpetrators have also been apprehended for sexual harassment, peeping, theft, and other misconduct-related reasons.

In fact, a total of 71 complaints, involving sexual misconduct against students, have been reported in NUS over the last five years.
