31-year-old Tan Qiu Yan was charged in court today (5 November) with one count of murdering 67-year-old adoptive father Tan Ah Bang on 4 November.
The murder happened at Block 190A, Riverdale Drive in Sengkang.
Here’s what happened.
Wanted HDB To Be Transferred To Her Name
Tan Qiu Yan was adopted by Tan Ah Bang and his wife when she was just born. The couple wanted to adopt a child because they had no children, and adopted Qiu Yan from her birth mother in Malaysia.
The couple treated Qiu Yan like their own and even funded her through university. Unfortunately, the wife was diagnosed with cancer about three years ago and passed away two months ago.
Tan Ah Bang reportedly retired seven or eight years ago, and suffered a stroke five years ago. Worried that she won’t have any money or a place to stay after her adoptive father passed, Qiu Yan asked for the HDB flat to be transferred to her name.
According to relatives, the father and daughter have been arguing about this issue for the past two months. Although the extended family tried to make Qiu Yan understand that the money and HDB flat will be hers if Ah Bang died, she kept insisting on a transfer now.
This escalated till 4am on 4 November, when neighbours who got up to pray heard sudden noises and Ah Bang’s screaming, “What the hell are you doing?”
They heard sounds of heavy objects falling to the ground for almost an hour, until the murder happened at about 5:30am.

Police Found Man Dead At Scene
The Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defence Force said they received calls for help at 5:30am. Qiu Yan had reportedly called the authorities herself.
Upon arrival, officers found Ah Bang lying motionless in the unit, with multiple wounds. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, and Qiu Yan was arrested immediately.
Police investigations are still ongoing, with the prosecution asking for Qiu Yan to be remanded for a week. They also obtained permission to take her out for scene visits.
She will return to court on 11 November. If found guilty of murder, Qiu Yan could be sentenced to death.
