Should black carrot cake be more expensive than white carrot cake?
For a fried carrot cake stall in Teck Ghee Court Market & Food Centre at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, it has been in business for 26 years and its black carrot cake costs $0.50 to $1 more than the white carrot cake.
This gave rise to doubt among her customers, who then decided to be kaypoh and inform Shin Min Daily News about this.
They didn’t have the cheek to ask the questions themselves, so they gave the carrot cake stall a free advertisement opportunity instead.
In response to the reporter’s queries, the lady boss replied that there is a price discrepancy because she uses good quality sweet soy sauce.
The Price of Carrot Cake
From the displayed menu at the store, the prices listed for the small, medium, and large portions of the white carrot cake are $3, $3.50, and $6 respectively.
The black carrot cake, on the other hand, is priced at $3.50, $4, and $7.
The stall genuinely prides itself for its homemade carrot cake.
When the stall owner Yang Yulian, aged 60, was interviewed by the reporter, she explained that the price difference was due to the sweet soy sauce.
She said that the sweet soy sauce she used is better quality and it’s also particularly expensive, since one bottle can cost more than $10.
If she were to sell both carrot cakes at the same price, she would be making a loss.
Ms Yang also said that the fish sauce she used was different from most stalls, and hers was at least double their price.
After walking around, the Chinese newspaper reporter discovered that the other carrot cake stalls sell their black and white carrot cakes at the same price.
The other stall owners who were interviewed remarked that the cost and revenue for black and white carrot cake is roughly the same, and there are almost an equal number of people who would buy either, so there is no need to differentiate the price.

Well, if Ms Yang wants to use better seasonings for her carrot cake and people want to buy it from her, that’s their business.
Since she has been running her stall for 26 years, she’s clearly doing something right.
Quality is Quality.
