If there’s anything we’ve learned in the last two years, it’s that surprises are going to pop up every few days or so.
Whether it’s a new COVID-19 variant, a cancelled travel bubble, or people singing the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song to celebrate the New Year, the unforeseen has now become commonplace.
This time, we have the resignation of an MP, but not from parliament or his party, but from his high-profile day job.
West Coast MP Resigned As CEO of ComfortDelGro Taxi Business
Like a bolt from the ComfortDelGro shade of blue, West Coast MP Ang Wei Neng announced that he will resign as Comfort’s CEO to pursue another career path.
Mr Ang will be replaced on 1 April by Mr Jackson Chia, ComfortDelGro’s group chief sustainability officer and chief executive of its private mobility unit.
Mr Ang has helmed ComfortDelGro for four years after joining in May 2017, and was senior vice-president of SBS Transit’s bus operations before that.
As SBS Transit is a subsidiary of ComfortDelGro, Mr Ang has spent a total of 17 years at the transport company.
“17 years is quite a long time already,” he said in an interview with The Straits Times.
Mr Ang has not revealed what he plans to do next.
Entered Politics in 2011
Mr Ang began his career in the Singapore Police Force and was Head of Operations and Training at the Ang Mo Kio Police Division.
Before which he graduated from NUS with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Social Sciences (honours). He has also completed a Master of Business Administration at NTU.
The now-54-year-old joined SBS Transit in 2004 and went on to hold various positions in the organisation, including General Manager of District Operations, Head of Bus Operations, and Senior Vice President.
Ang entered the political arena in 2011, when he was part of a five-member PAP team that contested in Jurong GRC. Ang was elected into office that year, and retained his seat in parliament in the 2015 general election.
He joined the PAP team contesting in West Coast GRC for the 2020 general election, and he once again retained his parliamentary seat.

His Replacement
Mr Chia, Ang’s replacement, spent 28 years in the Singapore Armed Forces, where he attained the rank of rear admiral and was appointed chief of naval staff of the Republic of Singapore Navy.
He had attained a degree in economics and statistics from the University of Birmingham, and has a master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy as well.
His time in the army came to an end in 2017, when he joined ComfortDelGro.
Mr Chia quickly rose through the ranks at the transport company, holding appointments such as senior vice president at ComfortDelGro’s transformation office and group chief risk and sustainability officer.
