Shockingly, one of the most high-profile Chinese celebrity couples, Hong Kong model and actress Angelababy and the famous actor Huang Xiaoming, have jointly announced their divorce yesterday (28 Jan).
The Alleged Rumours of a Split Up
Angelababy, whose real name is Angela Yueng Wing, started her modelling career after moving from Shanghai to Hongkong at age 13. She came into popularity around 2013 after diversifying into acting, where she won the Hundred Flowers Award in 2016 for the Best Supporting Actress for her part in the film Mojin: The Lost Legend.
Meanwhile, Huang Xiaoming rose to fame in the 2000s for his roles in various films, which include and does not withstand, 2012 An Inaccurate Memoir, 2013 American Dreams in China, and mostly recently, he won the Best Actor Award in the 35th Hundred Flower Awards for his portrayal in The Bravest.
After dating for two to three years, the couple had gotten married in an extravagant style in 2015.
Then in 2017, they gave birth to their only son whom they affectionately nicknamed “Little Sponge”.
However, while everything seemed fine on the surface—no loud disagreements or dirty faces thrown at each other on the red carpet—there have been a multitude of rumours over the years that the couple had split up precisely because of the conspicuous absence in each other’s life.
Even on major occasions like their son’s birthday, the couple were never seen together publicly.

Sealing the Deal
After a year of silence, the 44-year-old actor and 32-year-old Hong Kong model finally confirmed their divorce over their social media accounts.
In translation, the identical posts that they addressed to each other read: “Thank you for everything in the past, we will still be a family in the future!”
Then, in a strict and solemn statement from Huang’s Studio that followed, it stated that, “Mr Huang Xiaoming and Ms Yang Ying have decided to break up peacefully and end their marriage. They finalised the divorce procedures recently and will raise their child together in the future.”
Additionally, neither Huang nor Angela will be responding to further inquiries regarding their divorce in order to “protect the family of both sides and avoid disturbing the public”.
The statement also warns that if there are any generation of malicious rumours, they reserve the right to pursue legal actions for slander against the perpetrators.
Lastly, it thanks the media platforms and audience at large for their constant concern and adoration.
“The Chinese New Year festivities are approaching, may everyone exercise due caution when travelling, and take the appropriate preventative measures. Wishing everyone a Happy Lunar New Year, may everything be smooth-sailing!”
A Breath of Fresh Air for New Beginnings
It’s quite gratuitous to see a peaceful resolution to a divorce between a high-profile couple.
Wang Leehom and Lee Jinglei, if you’re reading this, please take a page of Huang Xiaoming and Angelababy’s book on “How to Properly Handle a Divorce and Child Custody” instead of the mess that you’ve been stewing for the past three months.
The appearance of a third party, the forceful entering with three men, long essays, pleas to see their children, and buying social media likes to get the public opinion into their favour…
Seriously, that saga has gone on for far too long and it needs to stop.
Regardless of their marital status though, we only wish Angelababy and Huang Xiaoming the best in their future endeavours!
Thank you for being the breath of fresh air to constant scandals floating around the entertainment circles.
